The weather seems to be improving so its about time I dragged the alloys from the back of the garden and got on with prettying them so I can get the winter wheels/tyres off. Need some work! I want to retain the slight turned finish they've got (I guess these days called "daimond" cut?) so haven't gone overboard with cleaning off the bare sections. Just rubbed lightly with wire wool to remove the corrosion, then a quicky polish. Then to mask, lenghts of tape over the spokes etc that was cut back using a sharp scalpel. Half way through here: Then on with paint, off with tape and before/after comparison I';ve only done the one pair so far. Hopefully get the others done over the next few days.

mate, those wheels are looking hot. I always thought a herald would make a nice little racer - it's got all the right ingredients. Off topic, but where did you get your bullet centre caps from on your Oxford?

Off topic, but where did you get your bullet centre caps from on your Oxford? Thanks. Bullets came from Moon. As in someone went into the shop in LA and bought them for me ;D The UK Hot Rod supply places tend t stock them these days. Don't expect the chrome to last long in our climate though....

Love the rev counter, great idea. Always extremely satisfying how simple things like that really add to the car as a whole

Yay, got the wheels finished! A busy week (and bad weather) last week meant I didn't get a chance to do the other two wheels until yesterday. In the mean time I got on with making some new centre caps. From L-R: Marked, Rough cut, Filed to scribed circle, Centre drilled/countersunk and large recess also turned. I then cut some strips of stainless steel sheet and bent them to form the clips that will retain the centres. These are fixed to the aluminium discs M3 c/sunk screws and locking nuts as I don't want them coming loose. Centres popped in and all four wheels painted/polished Then this morning I've bolted them on the car. Needed to make sure the centres were going to clear the hubs first. "So Seth" I hear you cry, "why go to all the trouble of making those centre caps" Ah ha! The finishing touch Back at the start of winter R-R'er "Imperial" put me on to an Ebay auction for these stickers that are close replicas of the originals for these wheels. Had to have them really! Job done ;D

Only a smallish shed and a patio here! The only thing I did here using any "special" equipment was turning the shallow recesses in the centre caps in the lathe as I thought it would make them look better. They could have been left flat though. The caps were cut out, filed and drilled by hand and the clip sections bent using pliers! Oh, and NOT Dunlops or Cosmics!

So, as detailed in my thread last week, we have some engine issues. Much as I'd like to just throw in a more modern lump and have it all hooked up adn running in a week there's no way it would ever happen that quickly and I don't want this car sitting around in a dead state for the months it would inevitible take at the moment. So today was to be the day to get the broken engine out and the usable spare lump in. Except it didn't start well when I discovered in the last day or two someone has stolen the radiator which I had left proped against the wall, complete with mounting brackets and hoses etc. Great. There was some blue air around the place for a while this morning. Desperatly need a radiator if you know of one. Old engine came out no problem once I'd remembered to undo the earth strap. So here was the scene by mid afternoon. I had spent some time degreasing and cleaning up both the "new" engine and the chassis where the old engine had thrown its oil. Got the "new" engine on the hoist, lifted it over the car then realisesd it wasn't going to fit because the sump is different I can use the sump off the broken engine but obviously don't have the suitable gasket which I could have ordered if I'd realised with the head set last week. A call to the 364 days a year motor factors found they didn't have one either. So the car's still up in the air with no engine until I can get a gasket later in the week. Going to be at least Friday before I can swap the sump over and maybe get the short block in though. Seeing as I needed the sump anyway I took it off the broken engine and extracted the damaged piston. Nice! There is a hole through to the inside of the CROWN. Ho hum.

With thanks to a chap called Doug Thompson on the Club Triumph forum I now have a replacement radiator. Just been up to Welwyn Gdn City to pick it up. On the drive was a very tasty 2500 on Revolutions - his wife's car!

Hoorah! Two weeks to the day since the melt down we appear to have a running engine containing all its fluids. I spent some time on Friday cleaning up the cylinder head from the "new" engine - basically doing an old fashioned de-carburising job. Then on Sunday PaulH came over and gave me a hand. First job was to swap the sumps over (Paul got the tasty job of cleaning the muck out the one we needed ) Then with sump attached we dropped the engine in with reasonable ease. Once all the bellhousing bolts were done, a few other bits fitted it was lunch time and Paul had to go. Then I spent an age cleaning gasket remnants off the top of the block, removing checking and oiling the cam followers and scraping the pistons too. I spent all afternoon into the evening bolting bits back together but ran out of time/light. I got it as far as being ready to fire but the battery was mysteriously flat and wouldn't turn it over sufficiently well. On charge overnight and this morning I got it fired up. and all seemed OK. Had to wait 'til Katie was home before I could fit the radiator and various hoses though. An initial road test found performance rather flat so I checked the timing and it was about 4 deg after TDC. Re-set to 10 o BTDC and it certainly seems lively. I'd swapped the dizzys over from one engine to the other but I guess something must have been a bit different - probably positioning of the drive teeth. At least the unknown rad seems OK. Still have to put the gearbox tunnel back in etc. but at least it feel like a car again. Its been a really busy two weeks for other reasons as well and fitting this job in as well was a bit of a pain. Especially as I'm hoping its only a temporary fix
