Well done Seth A great sense of satisfaction when they run again - and always to me some amazement since one was recently looking at a random selection of well-worn bits... Whats the plan for the 'old' motor.? I totally understand how much horsepower one can achieve by bunging the latest favourite donor lump in - red-top or big-knob - still doesn't do it for me. However - an over-bored high compression Herald 1200 with a side-draft or two would be STUPENDOUS..! You could even put some sort of weird magic-stick (camshaft) in it to foster that I'm-as-lumpy-as-a-lumpy-thing sound. Evil as a pensioner with an afterburner. Come to think of it - not sure I like that metaphor... Spill...

Yeah, its a relief to have it moving again. I hope this one lasts as long as it needs to Kilroy, its a temptation to get a 13/60 1296cc engine (which is kind of a bored 1147 though I think they had to move the bores off the crank centreline to do it) and "build" one of them. They're revvier than the 1496's we've had of late - this is now #3 since 2004. But its actually more of a temptation to try something else altogether We'll see.

I had a strange engine in mine first spitfire, built by an MG guy using a torledo (sp sorry) 1500 bottom end with a 1300 head and a mild cam. went like the clappers!

Glad you've got the old-girl up & running again... though it sounds like it was perhaps more of a chore than a pleasure - especially with the hassle with having to get a replacement Rad? At least the weather's been reasonably kind Looking back.... your refurbed wheels look sweet! & has given me inspiration to have a go myself on a set of old VW Scirocco/Golf cabriolet wheels - loving the centrecaps too Smiths Tacho looks the part too - reminds me that i've got a Moon one to fit..... but i'm not sure exactly how or where yet to fit it

Long time no update but a lot has happened. That engine /\ didn't last long. Until August actually when the big ends started knocking accompanied by very low oil pressure particularly after a run at speed. Balls. I got really frustrated and was basically fed up with putting Triumph engines in repeatedly as the car was getting pretty boring and staid and no longer "moving forwards" at all. So I decided to do things properly Here's a sneaky peek. First fire up happened on Sunday just gone and proper maiden voyage was to the Ace for the awards night yesterday. All being well the details will all be going into print so I'm afraid I'm not going to put anything more up about it for the time being.

Thanks chaps. Just back from adding 25 miles to its tally to go get another silencer for it from Burtons. Figured a trip like that not too far from home would be a sensible next step. Coped admirably in North Circular lane closed traffic. I've got plenty of things to finish off with it but its nice to not have the pressure of time like I did leading up to the Ace meet.

When you told me you were going to do this way back when at RRG09, I was jealous because I wanted to do it to mine (I had even bought the mazda..), and then seeing it done on Tuesday just confirmed I should have stuck to The Plan! Jealousy aside, I'm really pleased for you managing to get it in and looking so right as well. The pair of SUs probably helps, but it does look really period at first glance. Not until you go closer you realise it didn't start like that. EDIT: I just read that again, and it almost sounded like bitter jealousy. It most certainly isn't. Definitely self annoyance though..

Just read the whole thread. Good work! Found the SU needle mods very interesting. Something to consider for my Standard.
How does the MX5 engine compare in size to the 1500? I wonder if I could squeeze one in. ;D

Cheers Ben Substandard, the lump itself is a reasonably similar size - obviously the top end is bigger, especially at the front where the timing gear bulge is on the cam cover. Length is a little tight with everything Triumph kept factory (heater/steering rack). Exhaust is on the other side compared to the Triumph lump. I can imagine the Standard engine bay being a bit tighter though. Herald is made easier by having the removable sides for access while getting it all to fit.
