I bought this last weekend as my headgasket failed on my e30 cab and there was no way i was going to pay a garage £450+vat to repair it so i decided it'd be cheaper to do it myself later in the year and get a cheap runabout.. The problem was i only had last Sunday to buy a car for monday as i rely on a car for work...... £200 later and i had bought a 1986 Volvo 340gl with 107k on the clock and most importantly 12 months mot. (apologies for the poor pics as they were taken on my phone) Bodywork is a scabby in places but the engine is very quiet and it drives much nicer than i expected!! I didn't even realise these things were rear wheel drive till i went to look at it i've used it all week for work and its been great but i do keep looking at it and thinking thinking about the spare v8 and gearbox i've got and how relatively straght forward a conversion would be maybe a future project?!?

Heh looks pretty damn tidy! If you need any GLT bits then I'm braking one and I know of another for some sportier looking parts ie. silver colour coded bumpers and black grille Ooh and most people don't realise they're rear wheel drive, the 1.4 340 is far more tail happy than my 360 too! Fun in the wet! ;D Depending on the V8 itself, the gearbox itself will not be too much of a problem holding that torque. Theres a 360GLT (2.3 turbo 16v) with 375bhp in the UK running the standard drive train. The weak point with the 340 is the aluminium propshaft. Custom prop and an adapter plate for the engine, job done

Keep the original wheel size if you want slippy-slidy fun as SteveP says - I fitted 360GLT alloys to my own 340DL (my first car) with Pirelli P600s and couldn't get it unstuck at all, except in snow! I love these old sheds, especially the heated seats that make you feel like you've crapped yerself.

Mk1 GLT wheels actually (none of this flat-faced alloy business, it looked the dogs on the pre-85 double 5-spokes)! Yes, that car did feature on t'interweb, I was learning how to HTML at university at the time and it was my student car. No longer on the road as far as I can tell - I sold it in '98 with a stoved-in front (not my fault), then saw it again in '02, but it's disappeared once more.

Awesome! I remember that article quite well! The awful flat faced alloys are technically Mk3 alloys - but I am a Volvo 300 geek. And have two sets of the awful buggers! The Mk2 twin 5 spoke (and fairly damn dished) alloys look sweet
