Just been and picked up a new toy! It's a 1979 1.1L Golf, which hasn't been on the road for 2 years - so as you can imagine it's top kwality! Not an early bumper model, but still an early light/early dash model. It's as filthy as f@*k, but it's all pretty superficial, and hopefully a great deal of t-cut/back to black style cleaners should make it look a million times better.

The interiors pretty good, no major rips or tears, the only thing is it needs a new parcel shelf front and rear. Check out the styling Morrisons bag. It contains the lowering springs that the previous owner very kindly agreed to let go with the car. Time to get this mutha closer to Earth!

Top notch engine shot: The car's had a split hose at some point in the past, meaning the engine bays covered in water markings. Luckily it comes straight off with a bit of elbow grease. No actually rust whatsoever. Here's the styling 13" steels; I don't think. Luckily, due to eBay I've got three other sets of alloys to choose from. I can feel a photoshop challenge/wheel decision poll coming on! Early scirocco alloys, p-slots or sebrings!

For just over £300 i'm a happy bunny! On the wheel issue I'm favouring the Sebrings at the moment. The reason for this is that they're anthracite (so should oppose the white body work well), and are 15". The p-slots are 14" and are currently painted white, badly. (Really, why would you do that?!) The mk1 scirocco alloys are basically too mint to put on this heap, so should be saved for something more deserving. But they are just so god damn nice!

Nice to see another old Golf. As for the wheels, Golf Mk2 GTI/Driver 14inch steels always look nice and can be got cheap or free pretty easily. I've got Ronal's on my '75 Mk1 which look rather tasty, there's a thread with pics on here somewhere.

Ronals are very cool, and would be my number one choice of wheel (ok, number 2, just behind a nice set of Schmidt TH's). However, with a budget of £500 for the whole car inc all planned works, I don't see that being a possibility. Damn my working for a company who underpays it's staff!

Ah I see, well on a tight budget I'd keep an eye out for the 14inch steels then. If it has to be alloys then P-slots always look cool (when they aren't white!) or other OEM VW wheels. There were quite a variety of alloys fitted to Mk1 cabs, can't think of the name of them now but they look good and should be cheap.

I actually own all the wheels mentioned above. Well NickB should be picking up the white p-slots for me tomorrow, I'm gonna have to strip them back and paint them different! I'm also picking up the Sebrings tomorrow on my way back form D/Freeze. I'll guess I'll try them both on the car and see what I prefer. I can't help it, i've got a thing for Sebrings at the mo!

Well I decided to brave the elements today, and finally managed to get out to do some work on the Golf. First job was to fix the seat to the subframes properly. I found out these needed doing on my first drive in the car. Unfixed seats + brakes not used for a year = scary moments! Next job was to start cleaning up the bodywork. As it was so cold I decided to start on the inside with the boot/spare wheel/under rear seat area. A few minutes figuring out how the seats worked ( ), then ungluing the boot liner revealled this; Thankfully there's no major grot, and it's all pretty superficial. Some heavy cleaning/rubbing down later and things were looking much better; I couldn't be arsed to remove all the glue under the rear seats, especially seeing as all I'm gonna do is glue the lining back in anyway. I also decided to dispose of the spare wheel straps, as they were well beyond saving. Hopefully I can pick some up at some point, but I think I can live without them!

Been out there again this weekend, carrying on with the clean up. First job was to finish off the boot/rear seat area. All this really needed was for me to put everything back in, so a nice easy job. Only problem was that now everything was so much tidier, the parcel shelf looked like cack. Thankfully a quick couple of PMs on the Mk1 Owners Club website turned up a nice near mint one, which by now should be somewhere in the postal system as I type. The main focus of the weekend was the engine. The engine runs superb, and pulls like a train considering it's a 1.1, but it looks like it's driven to the moon and back: Easily solved. 1) Find man with steam cleaner. 2) Befriend said man. 3) Turn up at their place of work at 9 on a Sunday before they open. 4) Get engine cleaned! 5) Come home and clean/wire brush/paint manky bits. There's still quite a bit of cleaning to be done, mainly the hard to reach places. However, with next weeks plans including removing the front grill to access the slam panel, and also to take the front suspension apart, I'll leave it til then to do these areas. Anyway, heres a pic at close of play today;

What a difference a day makes! Great job! Cheers buddy. I gotta admit that this thread is actually making me appreciate how a little work goes a long way. It makes you realise it is worth the effort.
