Yesterday, i finally managed to get a chance to work on the Golf, now that my Dads MGB V8 project has gone to be painted, and has given me some garage space. I was sharing space with this: After giving the lowering idea some thought i decided to get lowering springs, i didnt trust myself with a grinder! I went for a 60mm drop all round. The finished article. This is before i've taken it for a drive, it has settled a little bit from these pictures. The handling is now fantastic, it corners like a go-kart. I just need to sort the camber on the front though as i'm not sure its 100% equal left to right. Whilst the wheels were off i also took off the GTi arches, and found that the arches were generally good, apart from this: Nearside rear arch. Dammit. Its a dent/damage rather than rust though, so it shouldnt be too hard to fix it, still needs doing sharpish though. I'm thinking of fitting smaller arch spats (right word?) on the rear too, as i'd like it to look quite original externally. (Anyone got a pair of these?) I realise that now my Golf looks more likes ed's than ever, but i am thinking of removing the bumpers too, when the weather improves a bit.

The Golf looks sweet, but I think I just 'went' in my trousers at the sight of the Cobra!

This hideous hole that i found behind the GTi arches was offending my eyes every time i left the house.. So i decided to pick at the paint, to see how bad it was, wrong move really.. There was a crack and then i'm left with a much larger area of bare metal, wooop. (luckily there was very little rust) After a brief cursing session i decided to repair the curse word quick sharp. So with the aid of some wag and a few Carlsbergs i proceded, and at 12.30am the same day i'd finished. Results = This is early the next morning. Despite spraying at 11.40 pm, then driving home 50 minutes later, the paint didnt bloom and has cut back nicely, shiniest bit on the damn car now. Think i'll be saving for a respray then..

I gave the golf a general tidy up over the last few days, put all of the screws in the dash so it doesnt rattle aaaaalll the time, blacked up the bumpers and chin spoiler, and after my thoughts of putting new wheels on it, before i did anything i decided to have a go at painting the P-slots. So using only left over paint they now look like this; I am sooo much happier with them like this, its made me enthusiastic about working on the car again. Overall look now; Total cost = £0.00. Which in my book is a bonus coz it looks loads better. ;D

Any way just to add, you need to do something about that engine, that car used to get regulary beaten around Coventry by a Ford Ka!!!

The Golf is cool obviously, but tbh I also love the Maestro. I'm not a big fan of "normal" Maestros, but the MG 2.0i model is great. You don't need to rev the nuts off them cos the torque at low revs is fantastic, better than the turbo model tbh. Hugely underrated cars, deffo a future classic if not already, and worthy of the retro tag too!

The wee golf is coming along great, need to get some colour restorer to that paint, it'll probably come up great! The p slots look much better now too. I've got a set in the shed that I'm polishing to a mirror finish, They'll be on the rocco for any show's I make it to this year hopefully

Hey, the Golf is looking great - I kinda like the whole 'honest' look it has. The wheels look better now they've been re-painted - gives them more definition & the whole car looks brighter with your sprucing-up - good work! I think I remember seeing this car around Coventry - some mates used to go to Uni there - I can remember commenting on its good condition as we walked past it, parked in downtown studentsville, on our way to the pub ;D Maestro looks ace aswell

I was quite surprised to see this on the first page again, cheers for the comments! Greg: Think you are right, it isnt the quickest thing on the roads by a long stretch, but things like that will have to wait. Think you should get some pictures of your Fulvia in the readers rides section tho. Dan: The car was in Coventry a couple of years ago, where me and Greg (above) used to go to uni. I've tried to get a finish to the paint but its had a dodgy flashover at some point in the past and it doesnt look like it'll come up. Dave: Wishing i hadnt sold the Maestro now, it was a fantastic car for the money.
