Hi everyone, i've been reading this excellent site for quite a while now, and i thought it was about time i actually posted something! I'll start with my most recent purchase, an '82 Golf. Apologies for the slightly blurry photos, i was in a bit of a rush! The original 1100 has been swapped for a 1300 lump at some point, and has a weber carb. Its also had the 4 speed box swapped for a 5 speed. (Both done by the previous owner) The ride height leaves something to be desired in my opinion, i would like it MUCH lower! Overall its very solid though, but the paint isnt great (Wet in the photos). 2nd is my daily driver, an '89 MG Maestro. Its totally standard, and comes complete with standard issue Austin-Rover rust in a few places (mainly rear arches and door bottoms). And much to my annoyance, a missing indicator lense.... I'm not 100% sure the Maestro counts as retro, but i thought i'd include it. Also any suggestions for improving the golf would be great as thats what i'm going to be (hopefully) focussing my attention on.

Welcome to the forum. Excellent rides you have, especially the Maestro (shame it's not the Turbo version!) Think you need to get the grinder out to the springs on your Golf.... and get some early chrome bumpers....

Cheers, it is a shame the MG isnt a turbo, if only it wasn't for a lack of funds...
How safe is it to cut down coil springs with a grinder? I was going to look into getting some lowering springs, but if i can just cut down the current springs that would be great!

that photoshopped pic of the golf looks awesome!!
Your golf is like the older big brother of ed's golf!! Identical colour, and i swear hes running black P slots. I think his is a Mk2 4 door though.

Nice golf, looks a very soild Mk1 which aren't too easy too come by!
If you look on ebay you can get -60mm springs for about £60, nice and progressive and still long enough to be held in by the standard shocks. I just sold my 1.3, but I fitted the springs, new shocks all around (about £50 from German and Swedish) and new top mounts on the front (about £20 from Euro Car Parts) and the thing cornered better than my 18k Leon Cupra R! Other than that I'd treat the rust on the front, underseal all the arches when you're doing the springs, and make sure you paint the filler kneck that run in the offside rear arch and rots away into your tank, blocking up the carb. Also prefer the large duckbill spoiler like I had on mine as make it looks lower, and if you're palnning any respray on the back I'd remove the badges (looks like the wipers been done) fill the holes and get that blown over. That's what I'd do anyway!

if it were me i'd keep the badges. It adds to the sleeper effect when you drop a 16valver in it! ;D

Cheers for the comments guys, i think as soon as i get a chance i'll be having a grinder to the springs on the Golf, see if i can get it about the height of the photoshopped picture. Apart from that i think i might leave it as it is, badges and all. For now anyway..
I havent seen another MG Maestro on the road since i've had mine, a few on the bay though, they go for peanuts sometimes. Its a good car to drive for the money, and a good laugh if pushed hard.

Hiya, welcome along. I agree the Golf needs lowering though not sure I'd cut the springs, the parts are cheap enough anyway to do it properly. It will handle like a go-kart then! The MG is a rare item these days, get the rust sorted out!

To celebrate a relatively cheap Mot pass (any pass is a success! ;D) I decided to add a couple of bits to the Golf. The main one being a roof rack (cheap from eBay) I've stuck an old ammo box and petrol can on too, and i'm trying to suss a way of stopping these going walkabout if i ever leave them on there. Ammo box: Quick rub down and a splash of orange paint (decided to stop half way through painting it and thought it looked good!) followed by a layer of varnish to hopefully stop it rusting.. hopefully.. And a set of centre caps for the P-Slots, finishes it off a bit more i think. Course now i'll have to give the wheels a flash over as the caps arent quite the same colour Next on the list is a whack with the stick, which hopefully will be this weekend, i'll put up pictures if i get it done.

Great looking golf! I was looking at one very similar before. One little tip - get some back to black on those wheel arches - made a huge difference cosmetically on my car!
