Did have one thought, was the gearbox in the XR4i a type 9?
If not, you could have used on of those

Yep, it sure is. The earlier 2.8 XR4x4 also used a type 9 with a transfer box to give it 4x4

There might have been different ratios but that's about it. I hae heared that the Granada box was strengthened but how true this is I don't know. My gearbox came from ebay claiming to be a low mileage recon Granada box.
