	Picked this up for £180, 92,000 miles on the clock and a bit of T&T. I plan to use it as my daily replacing my now deceased Golf. I wanted a Classic as they are a bit obscure, honestly, who buys the saloon verion of a practical hatchback! Was pretty shabby when I first got it... ...but came up well after a couple of days buffing and getntle use of a heat gun to remove all the vinyl. The bootlid had been resprayed at some point in its past and had faded badly and didn`t responded well to any kind of cutting back or polishing so I chequered it! Original paint... Guide coat for flatting back... Flatted back... Primer... some matt black, a roll of vinyl and some stickers... I'm pretty happy with the results considering I have never painted anything this big before and I used spray cans. I used about £4 worth of white vinyl from Homebase for the squares, all cut out by hand too!) I've binned the wheel trims for now and am in the process of collecting together some 14" 14 hole Golf steels. Should look sweet as painted up gloss black with some 195/45s, the arches could do with some winter protection too. Replaced a couple of bit for the MoT recently, front brake hoses, rear wheel cylinders, and these manky front ARB bushes... The next job is to lop a few coils off those springs!

	need to remove the side rubbing strip too, but it looks good, i especially like the boot! ;D

	a mate of mine had a concours winner in yellow, i'll try to get piccies. i was gonna remove my rubbing strips but they really keep the car clean if you don't have mudflaps, mine's a breadvan BTW.

	I thought about removing the strips but as you say they catch most of the filth that is kicked up and I park it it car parks, take it to Tescos etc and no matter how far I park away from everyone else, someone still manages to knock into it

	Nice. don't chop the springs though! You can get decent lowering kits for pretty cheap. Shocks and springs for £170 new (70mm) in this country. Or, have seen 80/60 kits on german ebay pretty damn cheap. about £120 iirc. Search fahrwerk polo 86c on germany ebay. There are no holes behind the side strips, so they just coem off, you have to get something to remove the sticky bits. Intensive tar remover done the trick on mine, its made by autoglym. I reckon you should do the roof and bonnet in the cheque as well. ;D You can get rolls of chrome trim from halfrauds, which I think would look well on the sills, and maybe around the windows? Anyway priorities, slam it, and get it on some nice 13x7s! Hope that helps....

	like doesn't work for me. secondhand springs are dirt cheap TBH, a mate of mine swapped the dampers on mine years ago and dropped it 40mm cos he had the springs lying around, only told me a few months ago, i never bloody noticed ! try clubpolo.co.uk 86C on there might be able to sort you out, i 'think' he had some lowering springs in stock, he's got loads of stuff, if he can't help you out someone else on there will.

	I'm not too keen on spending £170 on a car that only cost £180 and that I'm not planning on keeping for too long. I was going to chequer the roof instead but it has a sunroof and I thought it would look a bit odd and the boot needed doing anyway. I could be tempted by some 13x7s instead of my steels and keep them when i sell it on

	Mine is lowered 40mm, I could hardly tell the difference either! it does handle a little better though, not a bad consulation! But I would like to go lower... the back is not too bad, maybe just a 60mm drop at the front to even things out.. not sure... I just need to get some rubber for my ATS rims. (And also looking for a replacement for one of them - 6x13 ET30 if anyone has one FS...) Anyway - you wanna bring that beasty along to GTI International for the Undesirables?
