My family and friends are concerned about my love of the late 70's Opel Rekord (the one that gave birth to the first Carlton, allowing a whole generation of Vauxhall-loving sales managers and coppers to have a decent motor to blat about in), but I don't care. They are just comfy, funky old barges. Especially in this kind of colour scheme: What can I say? It's great if you like gold, 'cos it's all over the body, seats, door panels, carpet, half the dashboard...seriously though, it's as good as it looks, having had the 'one old boy owner from new' treatment. 52,000 on the clock. All I've done is cleaned it, sorted out gravel rash on the valance, undersealed it and refurbed the wheels. But, soon for sale, because of this one: This was on the Bay a few weeks back, didn't reach it's reserve so I stepped in. Not quite as nice as the gold one but (as far as I can see) it's only cosmetic issues - it's very solid underneath. Comes with two oh-so-80's accessories - an alarm you operate with a key in the back wing, and a glass sunroof (which looks sort-of-OK on Mini Metros, but plain wrong on a car as big as this). Also has Dukes-of-Hazzard airhorn which is great for blasting at cyclists, but apparently illegal for cars post-73. Ho hum. Sorry for the naff (ex-Bay) photo of the blue one, but it's still in storage while I plot to remove my front lawn to create parking space for it!

Why are you going to sell the gold one to keep the blue one?

Sure, it sounds bit daft, but the gold one's pretty close to as it rolled out of a showroom, so there's nothing more to do on it. The blue one needs a bit of TLC and I'm a sucker for keeping old motors like this away from the crusher.
Would obviously like to keep both, but a) don't drive the gold one enough as it is (1000 miles in 8 months!) and b) it would cause immense domestic dischord if I filled the garage, driveway, loft etc with cars and bits of cars!

Yes, that's the plan once she goes in for an MOT a week Monday (the current ticket doesn't run out till October, but as she's shortly for sale getting a fresh one makes sense).
Having looked underneath on a ramp, it's all tip-top solid under there, so I'll pump in the gloop to keep it sweet for the next owner, then it will probably go on the Bay...

NickB - Good work on the bidding, a car that rare can't end up on the banger track! I would have it but Mrs W would murder me, even if I hid it in a lockup somewhere in the village...
Incidentally, is there a way to find out how many of a particular model are still on the road, other than having a mate at DVLA?
PhoenixC - thanks for the comments. GM might go back to making massive profits if they reinstate 'crushed velour seating', rwd and chrome in my book...mighty tasty Monza by the way, are you in the Autobahnstomers?
Mr_Bo11ox - those Rekord diesels are dog slow and noisy as all hell, but come with an absolutely wicked bonnet bulge that puts me in mind of the KITT-era Firebird and Camaro. There used to be a Rekord van round Newbury some years ago. God knows why they even bothered trying to sell them new in this country, I can't imagine they were that cheap...would make a cool retro hearse though.

Yes I joined the autobahnstormers when I discovered that owning a monza is like joining the masons. A very secret society that no one will divulge information about unless you are a fellow "brother" ;D

I kinda joined by default as I couldn't find any other club that took Rekords - there's the Opel Group apparently, but they weren't even at Billing, despite being on the display map The Autobahnstomers seem like a good bunch, well they seem to tolerate me even though my car has two few cylinders! Apparently I make up 50% of the Rekords in the club (should be two-thirds now I have two, but this is only temporary...I hope)!

Mmmm, Opels. Nuff said *but carries on regardless* Maybe I'm getting old (the emerging grey hairs are a good indicator of this) but just lately I get more joy from seeing old cars in original condition than I do from seeing modified ones. During the war...............

Hehehe Well that old Rekord really is causing a stir. The red one with the rotten wings has been saved because it was me who put it on e-Bay. I then recieved an email from someone begging me not to let it go to a banger racer which made me check the feedback of the high bidder. The high bider was obviously a banger racer so I had to buy the car back because it was too late by this time to end the auction early. So now thanks to you nutters I have an old 70's opel sitting in my workshop......thanks a bunch tch!!! Well now you lot have got me into this mess I hope you can help me sort it out. I'm looking for a pair of front wings for it? These are the ones with the quarter front valance attatched and the single hole for the bumper. I did find a wing on ebay which I bought but this turned out to have the quarter missing. I may also need a front valance and definately an O/S sill (it's been welded and I don't want any welded plates on the car) I promised myself after a two year hunt for parts and a wallet busting restoration on my Riley 472 that I would not be restoring any more old cars. But this Opel seems to have a fighting spirit that has no intention of giving up just yet. It really does drive and run like new and has only 59000 miles on it. It deserves to be put back to it's former glory.

Just to add that the car was put on eBay by myself for a good friend of mine who happened to find it in a garage of a house that he rents out. He asked me if I could get rid of it for him which is how it ended up on eBay. I do not know why this car has managed to tug at my heart because in truth I have always been firmly in the ford camp (retro or otherwise) so it's a bit wierd how this car has managed to find it's way to be sitting in my workshop waiting for panels and paint!!! The stir does not of course end here..........I do believe that mr b011ox owes nick b a quid?
