Yep - thats me. We are actually Club GTI North Lancs, but want to go under a different banner with the older cars as they don't really go with the GTI scene. OSV half-owns the Polo along with Dave who has the MK1 Scirocco too. We've got some nice cars in the club, but not all are Club GTI members. There is Dan Perkins with his show winning red A reg MK1 Cabriolet (think its a GTI), another 4door MK1 Golf with a retro thing starting (see pic), Duncans 20VT MK1 GTI (white, and did a 14sec quarter at Inters), loads of MK2's (see pic) and the rest. There is nothing wrong with the GTI 'scene', but as was proved at last years E38 show, its getting a bit 'bling' and not really what we are into. It should be more about chilling out and enjoying the cars for what they are, not about how much money you can spend on it. I've been driving MK1 Jetta's for years now, and its only now they are becoming 'cool', as more and more people jump on the retro bandwagon. What is good about these old VW's now, is that they are accepted into the GTI scene, and also the Air cooled scene too, so you can get the best of both worlds (hence our weekend away last year at VW Action and E38). In the meantime, i'll keep a lookout for more early watercooled MK1's that need saving from the grave to add to the clubs coffers!

Hi Dan, saw your Jetta at All Types show last weekend, looks really cool! Agreed about early watercooled VW's being acceptable to aircooled fans, people in Beetles flash and wave when I'm in the Mk1 Polo... don't bother when I'm in my 'modern' Mk2 Golf though!

I got stopped by a bloke in a Bay camper, who recognised my car from Blackburn and said he liked it, and also got chatting to a bloke, who was camping next to us, with a show Beetle (red with a targa roof) who loved the car, which made my day! Like I said, its the best of both worlds, plus the birds in the Air cooled scene are generally fitter too, which is nice! Last year we went down to International, and I went in the Vento VR6 as i was selling it, and the journey was dead stressful as everyone was flying along at 85+, but I went to Action/E38 in the Jetta and it was so relaxing chugging along at 65mph in the slow lane. Different lifestyle, not just the car.

Yep - I definately know where you are coming from there Dan, being an enthusiast of both Air & watercooled VWs it is nice to have your car appreciated when you go to both kinds of shows. Indeed, I found out recently that my car won some kind of prize at that VW Action event I didn't even realise i'd entered it for anything! Thats the other beauty of our interesting 'Retro' VWs is that you can pick up well cared for often low mileage cars for very little money - although this seems to be changing of late as more people as you say are jumping on the retro bandwagen, especially if you desire an early chrome bumpered MK1 Golf

Yeah, I know what you mean - prices not only of cars but also parts/accessories are going through the roof - can I afford to buy a chrome door mirror, like hell I can! I started off life with a Beetle, so also like both sides of the 'spectrum' and now enjoy being in the middle. Just think about notchbacks/squarebacks etc, which were pretty unloved in the aircooled scene till there were hardly any left, then they became cool too. Looks like i'd better start buying all the old water cooled VW's up now. P.S. Got my eye on a nice early Scirocco on the bay, just don't tell anyone! I'm sure it'll go to some rich Southerner with loads of wonga though. I studied in Germany about 10 years ago, and was amazed at the scene over there, came back raving about the cars and people laughed when I said I wanted to do a MK1 Polo up!

Good luck with the Rocco' Dan - I wish I had the space & money to buy more retro metal to keep my Derby company I must admit to almost be-grudging the recent increase in popularity of the Old Skool VW scene as it felt like you had a little secret thing going with just a few other like minded fellows. I can remember discussing my desire to buy a Derby with some mates in the pub one evening - even though they were all die-hard VW fans (one even runs the local VW specialist garage with his Dad) None of them knew what a Derby was - now everyone seems to want one ;D However thats a selfish view, I realise and am pleased that the appearance of cars like your Jetta at shows like Inters and BugJam are adding a little bit of spice and added interest to the scene

I started driving in a Y reg Polo C Formel E in mars red, had it for two years and had a right blast - went all over the country in it, screwed the b*llox off it and it just kept going. I know so many people who had one as their first car. Got any pictures?

I agree. Theres nothing I like better than cruising at 50-60 watching a nice old queue build up behind (usually furious middle aged women with one tiny kid in a massive 12 litre range rover, on the school run). The look on their faces is priceless.

I was working in Wakefield over Easter and there are those silly speed bumps all over the place, the small ones that in a normal car you can drive straight over with wheels at either side. After trying that and nearly removing the sump and rear gearbox/engine mount (it sounded like i'd yanked the engine out when i hit it ), I had to drive over each one with two wheels v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y. Cars behind me wern't too amused whenever I went anywhere. I'm sure I knocked the gear shift out of alignment too I love going over the normal speedhumps, and watching peoples faces when they hear the mudflaps and exhaust scraping

Lose the side rubbing strips, lowered and with a chequered roof...and maybe a chequered stripe down the side too Stretch some wider tyres on the standard rims and stick some clear indicators on the side, and maybe tint the rear lights black. Job done!
