Hi peeps! ;D here are a few pics of my project: As it started out a few years back after bieng stood for 4 years: Looking very sorry after a few years of neglect by myself It was my first car 8 years ago, starting out as a gold 4-door 1.3L heres how she stands at the minuite after a bit of work: Looking a bit better these days! The body hasnt seen any work yet, but ive modified and uprated the mechanicals: an RS1600i alloy adjustable crossmember for starters! And a quickrack to sharpen things up a bit: The very tired and smokey 1300 was replaced with this 1600 with twin 40's. Also converted it to 5 speed to replace the origional 4 speeder that all the early mk3's were fitted with: Lots more work done and bieng done, i'll update shortly! Let me know what you think so far!! street

Nice! I had one of those for a bit. 1600 Ghia in Silver (mostly rattle-can silver judging by the finish). Hideously unreliable but reasonably quick. Nice to see the once-ubiquitous but now rocking-horse-poo cloverleaf's making a guest appearance! Reckon that's got all the makings of a proper Q-car... suprise them townies away from the lights! (Oh and that's a rather familiar looking Benz in the background... )

Ayup bruv! Glad you made it Well spotted NickB, that is indeed "Der Bruiser" in its old, unmolested state ;D You may also notice a Rover P6 skulking in the background, and a Ford Cologne V6 under some plastic sheeting.... in hindsight they should've been joined in holy matrimony but neither of us had the time! Hopefully we'll be at RCS this year with both cars!!

Hey bro! Yeah i made it, still with limited computer access so i will just put my two pence worth in when i can! Cheers nickB, yeah a Q-car was kinda what i was aiming for eventually. Want to go matt black when ive got her back on the road, keeping all the numerous dents in the bodywork.... a few battlescars tell people you mean business in my opinion! I too am a fan of cloverleaf alloys but I'm afraid they had to go cos the escort now has sierra cosworth disks all round and they only fit behind 15" wheels minimum! Got some nice Mondeo steels on it though so its not all bad, looks well 'ard! street

For some reason I think the only cars spots look good on are Subaru's and Mk3/4 escorts! Adam

Shame about the Cloverleafs innit? The rusty 15" Mundano steels look great though - proper hard!!! I can't wait to go on the test drive in it, if only to see it moving after (mumble) years!!!!

Niiiice!!!!! What box are you running with that 1600? If it's a bog standard one, you might want to considder an escy diesel box. Straight swap as far as I can remember and much better ratios. Not that I've ever dabbled ;D
Really need smiley on here with a halo ;D

thanks everyone! ;D great to be part of a forum where the old girl is appreciated and not snubbed cuz its got too many doors and isnt all shiny dminifreak- I'm using an orion ghia 5 speeder at the minuite cuz its supposed to have longer motorway legs than a '3i box..... i was thinking about the diesel box, heard they're pretty strong units aswell. I might look into that GJM- orions are great cars! I had one for a very short amount of time, and I'm fitting the orions rear seat into my escy cuz they're alot more comfortable! got a few more pics of some of the work ive been doing over the years: Heres the lightweight fuel tank which ive mounted in the boot: also have a perspex rear screen, and ive ripped the entire heater out aswell to save some weight! ;D to save more weight, but also to aid cooling i have made the front steel bumper into quarter bumpers: And i built in a recess for a motorbike-sized numberplate on the passenger side. The recess is flat as i didnt want the numberplate at a slight angle, and didnt want it to look like i slapped the numberplate on as an afterthaught... I'm quite anal like that! welded in, filled and painted back to matt black: Here are the brakes i am using- granada rear calipers with sierra cosworth 2wd 280mm rear disks, sierra cosworth 4 pot calipers and 280mm front disks, escort mk5 RS2000 handbrake cable, Escort mk6 1.8 zetec master cylinder and servo. Currently sourcing cosworth 4x4 calipers for the front as the 4 pots don't fit! Had to use the bigger sevo/mster cylinder because of the rear disk conversion. The origional servo brackets had to be modified to accomodate it:

;D Ways to tell BenzBoy and street are related: 1) Both undertake massively ambitious projects 2) With very limited funds 3) Instead of taking the tried-and-tested route, both of us fart around with making stuff fit that shouldn't.... Oh, and 4) Both have a thing for dog-rough looking (but fast) cars!! ;D

This is true! I'm not sure when the rat-look thing started for us but its showing no signs of stopping...... coming to visit soon, got to check out the satin black job youve started on the merc!! ;D Cheers for the support skodanorman and minion Yeah i think ive seen enough RS turbo replicas and boy racer-ed up examples to last me a lifetime! I'm approaching it from a totally different angle, no spoilers, bodykits or modern rims on this one! ;D Heres some more pics of the work ive been doing to bring you up to speed. Interior work now: My rear view mirror: It was origionally a wing mirror from moon products, but i found myself a toyota rear view mirror from the scrappers, adapted its alloy bracket for the mirror to bolt to, filed it and shaped it into something more aesthetically pleasing and polished the bejesus out of it! Just had to make an alloy plate that screws into the roof where the interior light went, covered it in headlining material and the job was a good un' ;D cant see much, and i don't have an interior light now, but who cares! its cool! Next is the dash: Always loved these oh-so-eighties digital dashes from the Ashtray GTE, the display is proper retro pacman style technology, so it would be rude not to put it into an eighties car!!! Fitted into the origional dash pod quite well, with only a little plastic surgery in the centre for the speedo display. Major cutting was required to the back to ensure the jobs done right, i really wanted it to look proffesional and not move around everytime you press the mileage reset button or something. I was also determined to not use any glue or sealer to fix things in place, as i want it to be both robust and serviceable in the future (as i said, i am quite anal when it comes to these things )therefore brackets were made up in white perspex for the whole thing to screw together nicely, with no visible screws from the display. White perspex was used to make the adaptor plates and other bits and bobs also: Still more to do, but when its finished it will have blacked out perspex covers, so that when the ignitions off it will look like a normal escort dash but without any needles or digits and when it is switched on the dash will illuminate in all its digital glory! The only problem was, i couldnt find room for the warning lights! So instead i made this: This had all the warning lights i needed, plus some i didnt! It was originally out of an E30 beemer if you didnt recognize it. They live on the roof, normally twice as long and serve to tell the BMW driver if something has failed. I very carefully cut it down to fit where the vent used to live in my dash ( since i have no heater now i wont be needing a vent anyway!) and has been wired up to illuminate the handbrake, oil pressure and headlight warning lights. What to use the other lights on there for i don't know! I made this with the same care as the dash and it all bolts together and bolts neatly in place ;D just have to find somewhere for the indicator lights now and thats it!!

skodanorman: sorry didnt see your question there- perspex saves a huge amount of weight over the glass ones, glass is desceptively heavy! Ive only replaced the rear screen so far but i intend to do the rest aswell. It was fairly easy to fit- the one i baught was second hand off ebay, it was for a mk4 escort but i assumed it would fit. it didnt! I wrestled with it for ages, assuming they just require abit of persuasion to get it, but i realized after that the mk4 window is 20mm wider so just a bit of sanding down on the edges was needed and after that it fitted a treat ;D The only problem with it it that because perspex flexes so much it can be easily pushed in if using the origional rubbers like i am, so I'm just gonna cobble together som sort of retaining clips to screw it together before it hits the road.

Completely original, and absolutely ridiculous (in the best possible way) mods! no curse word lights/headlight gimp masks/thalidomide mirrors/aerospace fuel filler caps to be seen! I love it! Sterling work that man. Keep it up!
