Back in early June I took it to the last Deva Dub Show. I was a member of the organising crew back at the first one in 2005 (I think!), I had a little orange flashing beacon on the roof of the Mk1 and drove it around moving stuff from one place to another, security etc, so it was fitting that I was able to take it to the last ever one. A great weekend. Nosing around the show and shine I spied another Campaign, a very very tidy blue one. Got talking to the owner for ages, comparing notes etc. I drove mine over to park next to his (mine was filthy!) and spotted that the chassis numbers were only five apart! They must've come off the line within minutes of each other at Wolfsburg. Re-united nearly forty years later! Really put a huge smile on my face. You may have noticed the big 83 on the doors, I'll come to that shortly...

I've been a part of the Volkswagen Drag Racing Club - VWDRC - for years. I think it must be about 15 years now since Abi and rainking began drag racing the Sambasaurus, and I've been on the Committee for 7 or 8 years, something like that. I've done a RWYB here and there (notably in my old Kangoo diesel van, PB of 22.89 seconds @ 54mph!) but 2022 was going to be different... My announcement to the club So first things first... No not crash helmets or race suits or licences or any of that stuff, nooooo - how do I want the race numbers to look? My race/membership number was 481 (or was it 184, I can't remember), but fortunately 83 hadn't been used before so I changed it for that - the year of the car of course. A few evenings of Photoshop OCD, playing with typefaces and things and in the end I binned all the complex 80s race car inspired graphics and kept it simple. A period 80s-looking LCD typeface, really pleased with it. For the rear I went even more 80s with a backflash-inspired layout I've had a few people ask me if the door numbers are original to the car, which I take as a huge compliment as they must look vaguely age-appropriate! "They look just like dealer graphics in the showroom to announce the 1983 model year", I'm pleased with that!
