Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, the 'campaign' refers to the fact that it's one of the last run-out Mk1 Golf GTI's. They came with a leather-trimmed steering wheel, green tinted glass, steel sliding sunroof, 14" Pirelli "P-Slot" wheels (which are slightly different to those fitted on some Mk2 Golfs), twin foglamps in the grille (NOT spotlamps like other twin-lamped GTI's) and a few other differences. A few more pics: The engine bay, this was when I bought it two years ago. It's pretty much the same, only cleaner and some of the wiring is a bit neater! One day I'll buy a load of stainless bolts to smarten it up a bit, polish a few bits up etc... Interior: Pretty much stock, the seats have had the black vinyl panels replaced with black leather in the past. The holes in the dash are where a previous owner has had tweeters screwed in, they really annoy me but I've come up with a solution, pics soon... Random pic:

I've always been a fan of Darren's Golf. It looks exactly as it should but with the extra clout of the 16V it must be a great drive.

Thanks!
It's brilliant to drive. It pulls OK enough below 4000rpm but above that it flies! I've never timed it properly so I have no idea how quick it actually is. From what I can gather from various forums, it should be putting out about 150 brake. The stiffened suspension helps a lot too, it's the most agile, nimble and 'chuckable' car that I've ever driven apart from my tweaked Minis...

Don't suppose you still got the timing slips from the pod when you got the better of the EvoVIII FQ-300... should be able work out the 0-60.....

Don't suppose you still got the timing slips from the pod when you got the better of the EvoVIII FQ-300... should be able work out the 0-60..... I never got one! I was so elated at beating an FQ-300 at the 'Pod that I forgot to pick the slip up... DOH! I don't think I've repeated that story on this forum ;D My one and only (so far) RWYB experience! ;D

Don't suppose you still got the timing slips from the pod when you got the better of the EvoVIII FQ-300... should be able work out the 0-60..... I love your Golf Darren - MK2s are probably better cars on the whole, but MK1s are nicer If you ever think of selling it With all due respect, that Evo should have creamed your Golf (twice the power & 4WD) - Was the driver still running it in, or did he start off in reverse? Out of interest can you remember what time you got? P.S; On all MK1 Golfs theres a pipe that dangles down (you can see it in the third picture down) I presume its a brake cable/pipe or fuel line, whichever it looks a bit dodgy

The dangling pipes are the handbrake cables... they always do that! Must tidy them up sometime... Yeah, I should have got totally murdered by the FQ... But it was her boyfriends car (he'd nipped to the loo), she'd never driven it before and hadn't got a clue what to do ;D I don't normally tell people that bit (naturally), when people ask is it quick I just reply "well, I dunno but I beat an FQ300 down the strip at Santa Pod" ;D Can't actually remember what time I got but I think it was a very low 16. Should be able to improve on that a fair bit with some practice, my launch was awful!

Nice Golf Gti - Its nice to see one that has not been modded. If I could get a nice Mk 11 Gti 16v like that now I would be prepared to take out my cheque book (again)

No it's not...not when you know the potential inside the mind of Dr.W. ;D Hah hah!! I don't really want to mod that one (too much ;D ), when finances allow I want to find a ratty Mk2 or solid 5-door Mk1 to turn heads with!!

Just thought I'd update everyone with what's been happening to my pride and joy: nothing. It's been sat in the drive and now and then I start it up, let it warm up etc just to keep it alive. Although the alarm/immobiliser is acting a bit weird (TOAD A606) so that's going to need sorting now too. The roof has gone pink from being sat in the sun Good news is that I've finally got some money and enthusiasm together again, and as soon as I get back off my holiday in August I'll be changing the front strut tops, sorting the rear brakes, cleaning it all up and getting it back on the road! Yay!

Wow!!!!! Excellent stuff Darren. I love mk1 Golf GTIs. I've had two now, the first of which was a campaign. I find they are just like Minis to drive (but on a larger scale) which is probably why I like them so much. The memory of all the young blades in our area running around in them when I was growing up probably had some influence too.
I do prefer mk1 GTIs when they look standard, perhaps with a bit of extra poke carefully disguised ;-) I wish I never sold my last one. It was Schwartz black and was completely original, still rolling on 9-spokes. I promise to buy another when things pick up :-)

Good to hear it Darren, get to work and get the old boy back on the road, the local Saxo boys need teaching a lesson!
