Why is it with modern cars you have to take everything apart in order to fix anything? Witness exhibit A: Why do I gotta take it all to bits in order to (a) trace a dodgy earth and (b) re-seat the dipping mechanism in its cup. There must be an easier way... And why is everything made of plastic so that the clips fall to bits rather than unclip as they are supposed to.... This afternoon I have the joys of tackling this..... Having made rather a mess of it. Oops.

I've taken my dads Impreza's front end to pieces on more than one occasion, which includes taking headlights off. Very easy, all the clips and connectors are decent quality, nothing has broken. Well actually, I made some grills to stop all the curse word from collecting on the radiator / intercooler, so I had to take the bonnet scoop off, which meant I had to take the insulation off the bonnet. All except one of the clips holding it on broke . All the electrical clips and connectors are very good though Adam

I kinda get used to it, new VW/Audi's have some really dumb ideas about hiding things, especialy headlight bulbs, customers always think things like that will only take a couple of seconds "No sir because you have Zenon headlights, to change the sidelight bulb you actually have to remove the front bumper,grill and headlight" As for the radio Nickb, does your 3 series have a standard amp in the boot? My 735 didn't have a radio in when I bought it and some c##t had cut all the wiring about in the dash so I ran a couple of amp leads to the back and took the speaker wires from the rear loom into a cheap 2nd hand Kenwood amp, result 10 speaker audio for about £30.00

the Storm is a bit odd - must have been a phase they went through cos my '91 polo was fine for wiring, alarm installation was easy as pie even with aftermarket c/locking and leccy windows. Yet the Storm, well the centre console sort of half overlaps the dash, there's shelves bolted on all over the place, the fusebox is half-open and half-hidden behind the glovebox and wiring just ducks and dives all over the place. far too many connectors too, for no real reason.

As for the radio Nickb, does your 3 series have a standard amp in the boot? There was a load of wiring in place for an amp etc. So I thought I'd get me an amp (alpine v12) and a sub (alpine 12in), connect it up and bish bash bosh. If only it were that easy. The old system (removed afore I got the car) must have been put in by Halfrauds or sommat as it was well rubbish. Nothing was wired up right, so what should have been a half hour job has taken somewhat longer!

Mine took about two days on and off to get sorted, I've left the rear speaker wiring longer so when I get another four channel amp I can run both bridged on the main speakers and move the sub amp on the right to where the standard amp was in the N/S/R quarter With the standard carpet and false floor in place it all looks pretty neat

sounds familiar ! just pray you don't have to remove the dash clocks, i've given up on having dash illumination cos we can't remove 'em without breaking summat. i know, i know... i puzzled over that for ages, there's one bulb out and i thought whilst the dash was in bits i'd replace it.... wel the dash is even more bits now and still the instruments sit there mocking me. the polo on the other hand - set of radio removal prongs, stick 'em in, pull the clocks out. 2 minute job and that includes taking the steering wheel off. guz... you still got that voltmeter for next to the ashtray? i lost the thread where you mentioned it, how much you want?

clocks out is...
remove front trim, pull bottom forward out of the slots that hold it, slide across to left a bit and pull out right side first.
i gave up !!!
the voltmeter ? make me an offer ? you'll still need a bit of trim to go around it, i think.

I know that feeling, nothing is ever simple. I had to change the air filter on a Porche 944 convertible once. It's not in the engine bay like any sensible car would have. Oh no, it's behind the front bumper, so you have to strip the front end just change it. Barstard of it was, when I finally got to it, it turned out to be brand new and didn't need changing

I built from scratch an MAN tractor unit cab. A complete bare cab. Had a write off as a donor, The wiring on those things I was so fussy about it though. Made diagrams of everything and labelled every single wire. That was my first tackle with auto electrics, talk about get thrown in at the deep end! The main loom was massive! Great experience though. That was at a bodyshop I worked in. Commercial place as well as cars. Agreed though, modern wiring/stupid ideas on cars are a joke!
