'85 Scirocco, but looks the same as my '91 Polo and i'd guess applies to pretty much any VW of that era....
Lift back seat up, three screws to remove the cover on the tank sender. How do i get the actual sender/pump/strainer out? Looks like it lifts off, the top has two pipes and a multiplug but there's no bolts, screws or instructions for dummies.
Hopefully the fault on the Rocco is the lift pump not working or strainer clogged, causing the main pump to work too hard.

HBOL...
disconnect wiring and hoses.
before removal note orientation.
press down and untwist the unit from its bayonet type fixing
remove and renew the sender unit seal.
refit in the reverse order. check unit is correctly aligned with markings in register. renew the crimped supply and return line clips with screw type clips. check the wiring connection is secure.

now you tell me!! ;D it worked... Haynes didn't say which way to turn it but a few belts clockwise with a socket extension and off it pops. Now just to find a new lift pump... all the wiring looks a bit dodgy on mine.
