what a damn week!! we'll start sunday- went to durham from donny, with the trailer to pickup a buggy. got there, all good, 10 miles into the journey home, a C.V. started knocking. curse word. it start to get REALLY bad by leeds, but it actually got me home without falling apart on the motorway, and whilst towing too!! cue the search for a replacement. but you cant buy just a C.V., you have to buy a complete shaft with both on as they're pressed together. ::)mercman wanted a frankly rediculous 80 quid +delivery for a second hand one. i managed to get a new one at the local motor factors for 75 quid, no delivery needed. ordered monday dinnertime turned up tuesday aft, very chuffed with the service. so weds morning i started to strip it down, got the hub end off in about 10 mins, splined in and held with one bolt! diff end was a whole diffent story. turns out you have to drop the diff down off the subframe, remove the endcasing, then remove a circlip from inside the diff on the inside of the spider gear!! doing it with no kind of manual didnt help tho so by the end of wednesday, i was all sorted. fastforward to this morning, i got a bit 'over-enthusiastic' with a humback bridge, got a couple of foot of air, not good in a slammed car, i landed about 70 foot away, with gauges to proove it!! but i also holed the corner of the sump so my street and drive are now covered with oil, and i spent this afternnon and evening pulling it off, brazing it up, and refitting. and getting underneather car car has show me just how fuched my exhaust is. thatll have to get done this week before it falls off. after such a bad week, i bought these to cheer me up!! ;D

Mmm...
My "new" one ('85 200) - horrible noise from the back brakes. Visions of worn out pads digging into the disc. Off come the back wheels... pads are worn badly but not worn out and the disc looks ok... new pads bought, changing them should be a doddle.
Ah. The pad retaining pins are very rusty. So rusty that a quick tap to try and knock them out was enough to shatter the ends. No aftermarket people do them, so a phone call to the Merc dealer is in order. There are three types of caliper, and the pins range from £1.60+vat to £4.79+vat. Each. Guess which type I need. And four of them. And they can't get them until Wednesday.
As I'm putting it back together to the car's at least mobile, one of the old pads falls in two.
And I've still got to sort out the whining diff and ominous clunking noise from somewhere underneath when you take up drive. Seems like this car hasn't been properly serviced for a very long time. The fact that the oil was curse word thin, and the filter so blocked that it couldn't actually get through (hence sod all oil pressure) is another indication. Could have been worse, at least that bit is fixed now.
Anyone got a set of wheel bolts for the standard alloys knocking about?

dez-ahh yes i remember now.smart Ah. The pad retaining pins are very rusty. So rusty that a quick tap to try and knock them out was enough to shatter the ends. just the ends. when i did this just after id got my 200t the caliper shattered where the pins located.on 3 calipers out of 4..curse word. quick trip to ecp and 500 quid lighter i had a full set of new brakes. then the self levelling went tits up.sorted that and alls been well until i piled it into a daft woman.still, not to much damage, and it adds to the rat look well.when the ins is sorted she'll be getting slammed asap ready for the retro show ;D

Ah, the joys of working on Mercedes cars! I think MB decided that their cars will never break down so didn't bother making it easy to get stuff apart! That's my theory anyway ;D. Second-hand Merc parts are a fuggin' joke. I got quoted £100 for a 2nd hand camshaft for the V8. Bloody ridiculous!

yep, i bought it off a strange man in a big cold barn in burwell!! in fact, it was steve who took me to pick it up!! i recon itll get some bodywork this year, and after this week its gunna be sump plates x3 i think: then i fancy nailing a lot of stainless tube together so i got something a bit free flowing with a few loess holes in in the exhaust department. i can only tolerate the tractor like noise for so long
