There are some people less fortunate than ourselves, who don't see the world of classic cars as we do. I like to call these people Ford owners clubs,.. but they could be VW owners clubs, or Opel, or anyone of a number of insular groups who have yet to embrace the true meaning of Retro. Witness if you will these 2 Retro Cars Show 2004 galleries I found : public.fotki.com/timmymagic/retro_car_show/80.177.63.204/escort/pictures/20040704-180044%20-%20RetroCars%202004/index.htmland a comment on the forum where I found these pictures : "NICE TO SEE PEOPLE SHAME ABOUT THE SHOW NOT ALOT THERE"* So I am asking Retro-rides.com members, can we reach out to more people, and teach them the true open minded meaning of Retro and Old School cars. Can we in some way encourage them to look and think a little different? -David *Frankly I found that I didn't have enough time to see everything that was there!

I'm sure we could reach further. Not all enthusiasts dribble over just one make surely? Does the RR flyer contain the mission statement? Plus, are you gonna put it up on the site so we can download and print some for ourselves?
There's always the process of putting this sites details on as many other club and car related sites as possible. That gets great coverage and will help put us to the top of google searches.

Surprised to see the comment about Opel clubs in this thread. The Manta club was at Retro last year, and will be again this year. We thought it had the makings of a great show, given that it was a new show and would get bigger and better when word gets round. I know some car clubs can be insular but I wouldn't call the OMOC that, quite the opposite in fact.

Oh don't take that the wrong way, I was saying that all clubs must have members that won't even look at anything else. I should have perhaps put MG up there, but I was struggling to think of car makes at the time!!

It's a shame some people are so blinkered, but I suppose that's how some folk are . I think I know where that "not a lot there" comment came from - there was a coach trip organised by the RNIB... must've been one of those. ;D

'thing is though that if you're in a ford club, and go to an all-makes show like RCS, then you're probably gonna take 70-80% of pics of Fords cos they're more interesting to you. like that first link - escort, escort, escort, escort, escort, escort, pug T16, 6R4, escort, escort. i know VW's better than any other make so i'll happily perv over an early mk1 golf with small bumper caps.... walk me past an equally rare chevette and i'll go "uh?" cos it just looks like a chevette. doesn't mean i don't appreciate them, just means i'm a volkswagen perv

doesn't mean i don't appreciate them, just means i'm a volkswagen perv I get that, but I'm more likely to take a picture of a car that I don't see very often than I am to take pictures of cars that are in the same club as me, that I see every month anyway. Particularly at a show like Retro Cars when there was SO MUCH to see. I didn't even get a chance to poke around the Group B cars. What I guess I want is for everyone to be a perv for anything with 4 wheels In some way I hope this forum helps that affliction get worse .... I never used to even look at old Japanese cars, now I trawl through pages and pages of incomprehensible Japanese sites in order to find pictures and info that will hopefully drag more people in!! BUt I'll do the same for VW, Audi, Fiat, Alfa etc. etc.

I don't like that sort of snobbery either, O.K. not everyone likes everything but I think its better to keep your feelings to yourself, but then again I hate upsetting people. Like Pillock I much prefer to look at a VeeDub as thats what I like but I still have a deep appreciation for other makes and marques. I may not ever want to drive an Escort say, but I still appreciate them and love to see a Mk1/Mk2 on the road. Anything that isnt clitty* is fine by me. Respect where respect is due. Oh and thanks to this forum for making me yearn for a Pao *If you don't get it, work it out

ya see thats why i never joined any car clubs ,even tho ive owned many"clubby" cars. my affections change almost daily and my love of old cars stems from a childhood of mad uncles with rods and fast cars giving me piles of old street machine and ccc mags on my childhood sickbed. ill oooh and aaah over nearly everything in a showfield even if no one ever does that for whatever piece of old wibblepoo I'm driving at the time ;D

the mboc are super facsist, even toward their own. i joined for technical info, nothing more. i did attend the 2003 concours though.my car was looked on with disgust because of its condition (rat) and me and my girlfriend at the time were given a wide berth, even when trying to talk turkey with an owner. just be cause i had orange hair and tattoos and sal had red dreadlocks and multiple piercings. silly old duffers.may upset them again this year ;D ;D ;D

;DI got practically run out of one club cos I painted my car silver, not the colour it "should" have been! My argument, that I'd bought it as practically scrap, restored and I'll paint it what colour I like, fell on deaf ears. I only painted it silver, not lilac with yellow flowers, perhaps thats where I went wrong!

Yeah I hate all that insular ‘in/out the club’ curse word. Saying that, do we think that old Ford people are particularly anal about this? I wonder because when you look in the back of Practical Classics, all the Granada/cortina/RS etc etc clubs for all the different marks and models etc practically have a page to themselves. Most of those clubs must have about 5 members. I can imagine a couple of ‘Ford Rallye’ sports-jacket + baseball-cap wearing geezers wandering round the retro cars show whinging cos there’s not enough MK2’s. If I actually saw that I’d find it really disappointing/depressing that there was not a bit more camaraderie between old car people, lord knows its needed these days.

Pao? (did I work it out?) Ahhhh, you gotta love the quirkyness of the Pao, the odd opening rear windows, the ridged bodywork and those fantasticly shaped door hinges but that wasnt what was to be worked out though, I know Rmad knows exactly what I was on about

i had a moment last week when i thought "hmm, should i really paint the Audi wheels black? and should i keep the amber indicators or go for clear/red?" - the reason being it's a Quattro Sport, one of 91 made or something, and i felt guilty about making it non-original... future classic and all that. then i thought curse word that - i rescued it from a scrappy, it's my car and i'll paint the dashboard orange if i feel like it. as for my original post... yeah i'm a VW nut but this forum has definately widened my mind and i keep trawling ebay for some right dodgy old clunkers.... engineless dolomites, toyota celica "ferrous oxide edition", that kind of thing. if i only go to one show this year it'll be retro cars, higher up on the list than bug jam now! hope to make both though
