Right, due to an impractically large fleet housed in the drive of a 3-bed Semi, I'm selling some off in an effort to become 'sensible'. Plus I could do with a practical caravan-tower. First up is my Victor. Now, as I've had her for the last 8 YEARS  Price is £600 firm. 9 MONTHS MOT, TAX EXEMPT It's a 1972 K-reg Victor 1800 deLuxe. This was the base model with no brightwork around door windows, and an all-bright grille. Much nicer than the SL in my opinion! Conifer (rare colour, dark green, not metallic) with biscuit & brown interior. Genuine low mileage car 50-odd thousand I think. Now fitted with the following: -Engine from a late (1978) VX 490 so is 2300cc with twin Stromberg carbs. -Twin K&N air filters. -Late type exhaust system (bigger pipe) NOS & genuine. -Lumenition electronic ignition conversion -electric fan with adjustable thermostatic control -Crane Fireball coil & quality leads. Currently fitted with 6x14 Manta type alloys with 195/60 Uniroyal on front & 235/60 Yank tyres at rear. All tread nearly new. Included if required are 5 original steels (been blasted & powder coated black) hubcaps & tyres. Original 1800 engine included. Runs really well and is amazingly good on fuel! Much more economical than the original 1.8 was. Just had brand new Laminated windscreen (specially made by Pilkingtons!) fitted along with new rubber and trim. In 2001 had new, genuine Vauxhall front wings fitted and full repaint in 2-pack. Always kept waxoyled underneath and is solid.
Bad stuff & jobs that need doing:engine has small oil leak from somewhere (not major, just a small patch when stood overnight) Noisy rear wheel bearing petrol drips slowly out of rear carb float chamber Spare wheel well requires welding (looked ok from underneath at MoT time but i've poked it though from inside the boot !) And the main one - I have reversed it into a post and crushed the NS rear wheel arch! New arch supplied. Couple of places on the body started to rust now too. Still looks tidy though and is currently in daily use. Sorry haven't any decent pics but it's best to come and view anyway. Here's what I have got:  then this one taken a couple of months back when it had Cavalier Rostyles on:  Some old ones taken after the resto circa 2001:    Those wheels are Mk1 Carlton/Rekord alloys and I no longer have them. The offset was wrong and the car never drove right on them. |

Nice motor. Slant fours always leaked! Its in the brochure! Mine weeps out of the disributor base. Check the wiring harness where it clips to the sump. It shorts out where the tape wears through here. Your leaky carb will be just what the short will be looking for. Beleive me. Mine caught fire like that. Be awful if it caught fire on you or the new owner. |

I remember reading about the alternator harness fires last year!!! tape that harness up is the key, or get rich and move it to a hign mount alternator.
Right back on subject , can I have some good pics of it as it stands? has it got the VX490 gearbox with OD? assume its 4 stud 100MM PDC? and where in North Staffs are you... On the look out for a ncie tax free car and a 2300 fills so many boxs, apart from fuel.... LOL
My last slant 4 managed 12 mpg on a good day less when opened up!! But boy it was fun.

Almost 100% certain that leak will be the rear crank oils seal (poetic licence to call it an oil seal its a bit of rope!!) if its leaking its got oil, and that all that is important.

I remember reading about the alternator harness fires last year!!! It was my car they were talking about In Practical Classics mag last year.  If you do buy this Victor pb only fit metric vauxhall wheels. The FE was the first GM Vauxhall so used Commodore bits & early wheel PCD wont work. You can cram Viva wheels on but you will pull the studs inward. Bad news! |

Phew! So much to answer -
I have owned MANY slant fours and know they all leak! Thing is, those outside the Griffin Circle Of Trust may not understand, so...
Checked harness when I fitted the engine, it's fine & not half as common a problem as you might think.
I'll try & get some new pics asap. & posted on here. Will be probably filthy though! (the top pic I posted is very recent, taken just before Xmas)
The gearbox is the original 1800 and has a lazy synchro on 2nd gear (very common on 1800's). The VX 490 that the engine was removed from had a Getrag not an OD.
It is most certainly 100mm PCD NOT 4 inch. I have fitted Cavalier/Chevette Rostyles, Golf GTi wheels, Carlton & Manta alloys, all metric.
As for fuel, don't worry, it's really good on petrol! (I know, I wouldn't believe it either if I didn't know!)

The Chevette is one of the vague ones  along with Cavalier Mk1 & Carlton Mk1 - Poor old Vauxhall reduced to being 'allowed' to design the front 9 inches of an Opel, plus they managed to get away with putting a Vauxhall engine in a few models too. Even the FE is based on the Opel Rekord floorpan. FE's are odd like that. One of a kind. Whereas the HC & FD used entirely Imperial fittings (being British Vauxhall designed), and the Astra/Cavalier etc use entirely Metric fittings (being GM Europe designs or German Opel) the FE sits between in an odd mix. The engine & gearbox being Vauxhall are Imperial, the body is all Metric. That's why they have the metric pcd. In fact, the early FE's had Rekord wheels. An Opel badge pressed into them and the holes are slightly smaller than on the later Dunlop ones. The whole rear axle/suspension set-up on an FE is almost identical to a Rekord/Commodore with many interchangeable parts. The front is completely different in every way! Oh, and check the door handles  Like I said, the FE is an odd, but interesting beast. |

The dash top has NO splits or cracks at all.
I changed the oil and filter last weekend.
Parts with car:
Another set of twin carbs on manifold.
New rear wheelarch panel.
Original steering wheel. (the one fitted is a late VX 490 type)
Original wheels, tyres, & hubcaps.
various other bits & bobs

don't know if anyones told you but the green paint on the wheel arch is a slightly different shade , probably only noticable at certain angles.

Had a question of concern about the petrol leak, so to confirm:
It's a very, very slow drip from one carb only. Causes no problems whatsoever except that when stood overnight the float chamber empties on that carb, so takes a bit of winding over to get started. When stood for shorter periods of time it starts merely by glancing at the key.
Okay, the last bit wasn't true but you get my drift.
Also, someone has asked if the wings are a different shade. For some reason those last pics I posted do make the wings look different. Let me assure you they are not! The wings were fitted before the whole car was resprayed.
