Great old friend called me tonight from Exeter. Her 1600cc Vauxhall Cavalier was sent to the scrappy in the sky tonight by the MOT man. He said she needed £1000's worh of work on the car to get it back to MOT standard, seems she did not even get scrap value off him Anyway, she paid £400 for the car 4 years ago... so a good run. She works country wide as a relief pharmacist, and every time she ups sticks, she moves everything she has in her car, so needs folding back seats, or an estate type thing. She loved the Cav for all the right reasons, and would love a diesel one if possible with decent MOT, tax would be a bonus. I know they come cheaply, so who has what ? She is carless in Exeter right now and needs to find something RELIABLE and possibly economical. Cheaply and as close as possible. Other alternatives are Golf Estates, Passats etc...... PM or post please.

Grizz, there's a diesel one (Isuzu) on VXON at the moment (I think) for about £500. In fact, here's a link... www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread.php?t=154505Personally speaking I'd want it a bit cheaper but diesels are fetching silly money now and it seems to have a full MOT. I should say I do NOT know the car or the owner by the way. Hope it helps anyhow.

Thanks a lot, will look in a minute, Keep ideas, or examples comming please. She does need a bit of size unfortunately, or else the 323 on here or a Volvo 340 may have been good. What is this like for one of these? miles seem like a large number.
The mileage is around 185,000, its had new clutch about 30,000 miles ago, new rad, new water pump, new exhaust right through including downpipe, two new tyres on back 185/60/14s,its got alloys nothing special but they are alloys, new windscreen, new handbrake cable, new front pads etc. The cars got a few scratches down the sides but its metalic silver so it doesnt show too much. Does around 480 to 500 miles to a tank depending on how you drive it. Ive got all the mots from new and most of the bills that ive spent out on the car. It goes well is very reliable and as i said will probally outlast my astra. But needs must its got to go. Iwill try and upload some pictures if i can. Before i forget ive just put a new mot on it as well Yesterday. cheers john

As far as I know they're good for loads more miles if looked after. I use to drive one as a Private Hire car, and that had done around 250000 when it had an under bonnet fire and was scrapped.
I'm selling a 98 Xantia Estate at the moment, mind you it's done more miles than that (192K), is tested while may and taxed end of June. I want £750 for it (it's up for £850 locally). It'll run on veggie oil though, makes it good and cheap.
I'm not very local to her though.

I had a 250,000 miler ex-taxi too and the engines are honestly ace things capable of lot more than that if looked after. In fact a lad at work has an early Vectra with the same engine that I think is knocking on for 300,000 miles and he swears by it. Later GM low blow engines were never as good imho. The Isuzu engine is legendary, only really need to check for the usual things like oil/water mixing or loss problems and whether it's been well looked after. They can also be tweaked well I'm told very easily and cheaply if you want a little more welt. Xantia not a bad choice either. Have you considered a BX? Little quirky and can be expensive to fix if she can't do it herself, but she'll be rewarded with a fantastically comfortable, roomy and economical drive.

Cav I take it? One owner and history sounds very promising assuming it's in good nick with a decent MOT. As you'll both already be aware I'm sure Cavalier parts are stupidly cheap if it does want anything or she feels like blinging it up a bit.

If you copy the whole of that link, not just the yellow bit, and paste it into the adress bar, it all comes up. Is a private sale, and is a 1700 diesel , 1996 model with 148k miles on. Burgandy colour. Seems good, and only 36 miles from her postcode. 1700cc Diesels ?? Any good, or very good ?

Very good, n/a ones are slow but assuming TD (link still doesn't work sorry) they go well enough and dead reliable.

Thanks all, subject to fine print and her trying to get 6 months tax and a MOT redone....
She has gone with her heart, and identified a 1996 Honda Civic 4 door 1.6 Auto in White, with 66k miles and one lady owner, garaged all its life. For £1600. But that is her choice, she has decided to get 6 months finance and pay it that way instead.
