I'm going to obstain from voting as I can't make up my mind - i'd love to own a mint example of either.
The Peugeot definately has the finer chassis being far more lively and possesses probably the best steering feel of any car I've driven.
The Golf on the other hand (An 8v MK2 being my prefered GTI) Still handles well, but in a more fuss free, dependable manner - they are also far better built and feel like you could drive it to the moon.
Both are handsome cars - the 205 I feel having a bit more flair in terms of styling, but the Golf is pleasingly boxy. In an ideal world I would have a mint example of each sitting side-by-side in the garage, so I could take which ever car suits my mood that day
hello haysey... the last thing i needed right now was you popping up with that immaculate G40 in your sig....... oh the memories *sniff sniff*
anyway. My heart says Mk1 GTI, my right foot says 205GTi 1.9 - the Goof is quick, but the 205 is scary quick and that's important. this is me as a VW nut saying this too!! my mate had a Clio 172 for a while and says it was nowhere near as fun as a 205.
Never trust a man Who names himself Trevor. Or one day you might find He's not a real drug dealer.
given the choice of which one to buy it would be the golf, germanic build quality wins every time. i am an english car fan though.
but given the choice of which to take for a quick b road thrash. 205 hands down.
the way you enter a corner in a 205 at speed, ease off, back end steps out, floor throttle and play. what more can you ask for this side of a rwd drift.
What Moggy says is true, and its one of the reasons why so few are around today. Quite often the back end jumped out rather than stepped and left the unhappy driver (thereafter passenger) to slide smoothly into the hedge / wall / lamppost.
The 106 Rallye has a similar trait (not quite as pronounced as the 205)
I'll go for the Golf as mine has never bitten me on the !!

Don't get me wrong, the 205 GTi is great (I've got both ), but the gear change in the golf is SOOO much nicer, it sounds better, it goes better, and its rapid as hell too (mines a 16v MK2, with Audi 2.3 throtttle body, flowed head and K&N pannel).
I can get from A to be faster in the golf, but the 205 can be a bit, not a lot, but a bit more fun.
That said, i'm really into driving my bus at the moment, cos thats just cool.
The lurker formerly known as Cappuccinocruiser.. or wedgedout..
I've only ever driven a Golf GTi so I can`t really compare the two.
My Golf was only a standard 1.6 Driver but it was a sweet handling car, the Pirelli P6000s helped massivly. You could throw it into a corner and just drift it round, the steering was perfectly weighted. Build quality was amazing too, even after 125,000 miles.
My Dad did have a black F-plate 205 1.6 GTi in 1991 when I was 10 and I remember that being the fastest thing I'd ever been in.
I almost bought a 205 GTi on the bay the other week to replace my Golf but paid my rent instead!!
A guy I know from Uni has a 205 Mi16 (pictures on neilhayes.com/ )
