For sale is my 1971 VW fastback in the original color of metallic turquoise. This car is beautiful having covered a mere 41,000 miles from new and has never seen a welder in its life. It runs a 1776 built by T3D, run on the dyno and checked over by John Maher Racing. It also sports a new set of Flat 4 SprintStars, Flat4 Shifter and Flat4 Wood steering wheel, all of which are in superb condition. I have owned the car for about a year and it has never once let me down.I NEVER take the car out in the wet, damp or when there is even a hint of salt on the road. It also lives in a garage and so is kept dry all year round.
The previous owner bought the car from auction for over £5000 in 2001 when it was completely standard (it had previously sold at auction in 1999 for over £6000!!...... all this evidence including original auction booklets and sales receipts come with the car). He then went about and tastefully customized it so that it is now even better then when it was purchased. One of the auction booklets is pictured below.
This car had one owner up to the early 1990’s when it was bought by an enthusiast who took it round the VW show scene and won numerous trophies with it. All in all there are 9 trophies that come with the car, all won by the vehicle in the early 1990’s. The trophies are pictured below and are:
• VW Action 1992 Classic Concours D’Elegance 1st in Class
• Benson and Hedges Concours, Most Original Vehicle, International Final 1992 .(this was a HIGHLY prestigious event and is now the Autoglym Concours)
• Benson and Hedges Concours, Winner – Club Class D 28th April 1991 Tatton Park.
• Volkswagen Northwest 93 (although they it was spelt ‘Volkswagon’ on the trophy?!?), Class 5 winner.
• Volkswagen Northwest 1992, Class 6 Winner.
• 1992 Winner, Type 3, Lothians VW Club.
• Class Winner VW expo 1992.
• The Rotary Club of Wortley, Class Winner.
• Armour-All Concours, 1970-1776 Classic Saloons Winner.
The interior and carpets are also beautiful and original. There has been a very slight tear to the top of the rear seat at some point in the cars life but this has been stitched and is barely noticeable.
The car drives nice and tight as all VWs should (well it has only done 41,000 miles) and goes like a train if you want to put your foot down, although to my knowledge it has never been raced on the strip or owned by anyone who has not taken great care of the car.
I have a FULL A4 folder of bills receipts and past MOTs for it. This is a brief rundown of what there is:
• Original Owners manual.
• Original VW sales and service guide
• Original VW dealer manual cover which came with the car when new
• Original Sun visor cover which came with the car when new
• Every MOT from 1981 to date.
• T3D invoices totaling £7265
• Invoices for building and dyno running of the engine totaling £3637
• Original auction booklets and sales receipts from when the car was previously sold at classic car auctions.
If you were wondering, the big folder of receipts goes with the car as do all the trophies!
There is 10 months MOT on the car, 7 months tax although it is tax exempt so won’t cost you a penny!
On the negative side the paintwork has gone a little funny and crazed (this was one of the first metallic colors VW did!) and there are some rust spots on the body work. The worst part of the car is some corrosion in the air-box but believe me when I say that this IS the worst part of the car and people don’t even see it when you are driving as it is under the bonnet.
The engine is very clean (it does not leak oil), reliable (well it was built by T3D and dynode by John Maher Racing) and quick (you should see the look on peoples faces when they are blown away by a car and they don’t even know what it is!!! )
I am asking for £2995 no offers which I think is a fair price for a car which is quick, reliable, and completely solid with such a remarkable history. It is also a great opportunity to buy a car which will make you stand out from the herd of camper drivers at the next show. I really don’t want to sell the car but I want to buy a new car for work and so the money has to come from somewhere.
