I treated my Dad to a Volvo T-5 for his 60th birthday, so his Golf is now surplus to requirements. It has been amazingly reliable and economical (36mpg average) since I bought it for them back in 2001. When I was looking for a Mk2 Golf back then it was almost impossible to find one with automatic transmission, especially one that's an honest workshorse like this.
The Golf has been driven on daily basis by my retired mum and Dad and very well maintained. I am selling the car on their behalf as they aren't very good with computers. If anyone is looking for a cheap and very easy to maintain hatchback auto then you couldn't get much better.
IN A NUTSHELL This car has been fantastic. It has never let them down and enjoys motorways as much as town driving. My Dad is a retired engineer so he's done some of the service work on it (he recently serviced the car and changed the automatic fluid - something most people never do). We have lots and lots of receipts and bills of all the stuff that has been done since owning the car in 2001.
The car has only had 3 owners and covered 112k, which isn't bad for its age. All in all this is a really good reliable Mk2 auto (of which there aren't many) that we want to go to a caring new owner. The Golf starts first time and always runs well. It doesn't burn oil. The gearbox is very smooth for one of these and it's very nippy for a 1.6 on kickdown. It stops well. It has had many new parts.
With a polish it will look excellent and provide cheap rot free motoring.
RECENT NEW PARTS: I cannot dig through all of the paperwork (there are loads of pervious MOTs etc) but these are the bits I do know of: Full service, auto trans fluid change and gasket, nearly new tyres, radiator, starter motor (this is new in the box but not fitted. It cost £100 alone!), brake discs and pads, wheel alignment.
BODYWORK: Unfortunately I was unable to give the car a decent valet before the photos were taken so you are seeing her in its worst state really! Like all Mk2s this Golf has been rust proofed so well as standard that the underneath still looks super solid and it never fails the MoT for rot. Even the doors are free from rust. There are a few parking dings dotted around the bodywork though, the worst of which is a dent in the rear valance panel and slight dings on both rear arches. Saying this, they are not major at all. The tailgate has a few surface rust scabs on the botttom edge, but that is common for a 19-year old Mk2. The front o/s wing has faded blue paint but it will probably come up with a T-cut and polish. Equally the plastic front bumper is a bit dull and scraped on the corner, but a good spare replacement is included in this auction.
INTERIOR: It's pretty much immaculate. Blue cloth with no rips and only one tiny area on the driver's seat which has been professionally repaired with matching VW material. The inside of this car has done a fantastic job of surviving the test of time. It doesn't leak, even in the rain we had lately, and it feels comfortable. The 112k mileage is genuine and all of the previous owners have looked after its innards.
KNOWN FAULTS: Ok so the old thing is 19 years old but there are no major faults with the car. These are all of the ones I can think of, and I'm being quite picky....One of the rear passenger doors doesn't open using the exterior handle. You have to reach around to open it from the inside. No big deal. The starter motor still works ok but is noisy. I actually bought a new one but never got around to fitting it so it comes with the car still in the box. It cost over £100, even from GSF car parts!
The Golf does currently have a Pioneer CD player and Pioneer custom fit speakers, although I'm tempted to keep them for my other half's Mk2 GTI... not sure yet
BARGAIN @ £300.
