As the baby brother of the BMW 2002, the 1602 has exactly the same body shell, but is fitted with a 1600 engine, rather than a 2 litre. Don’t think that the performance is anything but sprightly though – with McPherson strut suspension, coil spring IRS rear, and a top speed of 100mph, it’s a great drive!
My 1602 is one of the very first, as it was made in 1971 (previously, they had the designation 1600-2). As an early model, it benefits from being tax exempt (unlike most of them), and has the beautiful full chrome front grill, and round rear lights.
Mechanically, since I’ve had it, I’ve done a lot of work to make sure it works as it should, including:
Brakes - rears adjusted, fluid replaced and bled
Propshaft Coupling – replaced.
Gearbox. replaced with good second hand item.
Gearbox mountings – replaced
Gear shift bushings - replaced.
Water pump - replaced.
Clutch – replaced both driven disc and cover.
Clutch release bearing – replaced.
Alternator - replaced.
Radiator – replaced.
Oil pressure switch. – replaced.
Front tyres – replaced.
Driving it now, it feels like a modern car, with light steering, great handling, and a quiet but very responsive engine.
Bodywork wise, it is solid underneath, and flew through its MOT in March with no advisories. There are a few bubbles on the front wings, and a couple of small areas in the front inner wings (non-structural) that may need attention before too long, but none of it’s got worse since I’ve had it, and would be very easy to fix.
I’ve got loads of history for it, with MOT’s going back a long way, and numerous receipts for work done. Currently, it’s MOT’d until next March, and taxed until next February
Overall, it would make a perfect ‘daily driver’, which is what it’s been for me. I’m only selling it as I fancy something a little bit different.
Price - £1200ono or px with cash either way for something interesting. I’m based in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey
