It's the oil light that put people off. These engines are so touchy about things like that and XY engines are pretty hard to find these days and any one you do find probably needs a rebuild so your looking at around £7-800 just to sort that out (worst case) which makes the car essentially worthless. Possibly - which is why I also suggested an engine swap from another Samba/104/205/Visa. I've had it checked thoroughly and the garage I've used for years identified the oil pump, as did the RAC. Since I'd rather spend more money than I have already on a new-ish Saab convertible, that's the reason for selling. I've got 16 people watching the auction already, so hopefully it'll go this time. Either here or on eBay. If it doesn't I'll either buy and fit the oil pump I've been offered or source an engine and get it fitted.

Bump - currently 33 watching.
Someone please bid/buy/offer a swap. I'm getting grief from SWMBO.

I really want it but can't afford that for a non-runner in case it needs much more spending on it :S

Either here or on eBay. If it doesn't I'll either buy and fit the oil pump I've been offered or source an engine and get it fitted. I'd get the oil pump fitted. It's not the biggest job in the world. Finding a replacement XY engine could take months, they aren't exactly lined up in breakers yards, and most of them will need a rebuild before fitting. That said there's a guy a few cars down from your listing selling new XY's, but only 1124cc versions and for £300 each. Engine out, swap ancillaries engine in is a good full day in the workshop so £300-400 right there if you don't do it yourself. You really don't want to do that only to find that the engine you bought has a stuffed head gasket, which is very common and means the engine has to come out to change it. In short the XY engine has a poor reputation for reliability around head gaskets and oil pressure, leading to rapid wear of cams etc. It doesn't really deserve the rep but it hates poor servicing, which most old XY'ss have been receiving for years now. Boshing the pump on would (if it solved the oil light problem) allow you to sell the car as a proper runner and stand far more change of making some good money on it.

It would but I'm currently going to leave the auction running - there's over 40 watchers, partly because: a) I've got no facilities - my garage is now my study. b) I'm getting serious grief from the neighbours. ATM I've got 4 cars (driving a works car too) and I can only fit 2 on the drive with no pavements and only parking for 1 more. I'll see - if it doesn't sell I'll go down the oil pump route, but I'd prefer not to. Update: I might take a part-ex on a low ins. group car for someone who's just starting to drive and needs something cheap and simple to insure.

Ends tomorrow lunchtime - with 49 watchers including the author of the 104 article I referenced!
Unlike optimusprimer - no bids yet, but if one without tax/test can reach £290 unrestored, surely ....

Winning bidder on eBay's just contacted me and doesn't want it. Aaargh eBayer's. Why on earth did he bid then? ? It does make you wonder with some people don't it.

I haven't a clue. He seems to be a car trader and hasn't paid for something else he bid on.
Anyway, I've re-listed it on a 5-dayer and hope it goes which at £250 it should. I'm not going to fit the oil pump since I've not got any workshop facilities.
If it doesn't sell I'm tempted to strip it for spares - I'd get £60 for the wheels, something for the engine, the hood's nearly new, other spares are probably worth a bit too. I just hope I don't have to as SWMBO wouldn't speak to me for a month.

PM sent to Jenn. I need it gone and I'd prefer it be put to use than not. Also, my neighbour thinks his house won't sell because of the Samba and my Saab on the driveway.

Provisionally sold to a RR'er - a better home than an eBay'er.

I adore this little car, I'd have bitten the man from Dewsburys arm off if it was a goer You were one of many who said that. If I'd had the time the work would have been done, but other things (work, neighbour, no proper rear belts) meant it was going to be sat for some time yet. And yes, I should've checked whether it had lap belts first but it was late, I'd had a very bad day and was on the 'bay when I bought it. It made more sense to let the little Samba go to someone who'll use it as it should be used. I'd had a number of definate offers outside of eBay but thought a RR'er would be a better person to look after the car than someone from eBay. It also means that I've got more ability to persuade SWMBO that I can go and buy a convertible with 4 proper seat belts. And for some unknown reason (my devestating charm ) she's agreed ;D

Thanks Shortcut I'll bear that in mind as no doubt we'll be needing some parts at some point. Once Dad has finished an engine swap on a Pug 306 GTi6 with my bro-in-law he'll be turning his attention to the Samba, in the meanwhile I'm responsible for the cosmetics- *cue the yellow rubber gloves coming out the drawer *
