1987 Merc 609D recovery truck. Large bed which will take all kinds of vehicles. For example I`ve had a Triumph Spitfire on it (without needing to chock the ramps) and an LDV Convoy LWB high roof 3.5T MGW van which was well within the legal weight limit of the recovery truck.
Proper built recovery bed, not one of those half arsed efforts which are a few sheets of cheap metal cobbled together with some old car inspection ramps.
Has some extremely heavy duty slide away ramps that will take the weight of almost anything, would seriously take an HGV if it fitted.
Mega strong winch that pulled the Convoy up with a fat mate in the driver`s seat like it wasn`t there: anyone who`s owned a truck before will know a decent winch is everything. I`ve also pulled damaged cars and ones with the breaks stuck on no problem.
Chassis and rear bed are as solid as a rock, no nasty Transit chassis that rot and snap with a bit of weight on them. I believe this was a purpose built truck for a Mercedes dealership when new (found their decals under the side of the body when I repainted the back).
It`s a 4.0 litre n/a diesel and suprisignly good on fuel (non turbo) and is easily as economical as the 2.5 Transit I owned before it. Still pulls off in 2nd gear even when loaded, very torquey engine.
Has proper full length beacons (again no cheap curse word), working rear spot light, just fitted a CD player and the fag lighter is 12V and working (now) which means you can plug your sat nav and phone charger into it.
I`ve done a few 150 mile plus trips in it without bother, though used more for local runs nowadays.
It`s also got a side locker for spare straps and fuel cans etc which is very useful, along with a good storage box behind driver`s seat for tools etc.
It`s a single passenger seat model (weight saving over a twin seat) though you could probably fit a twin passenger seat into it if you wanted.
Can`t praise the truck highly enough, it`s my 3rd recovery truck and the best I`ve owned or driven by miles. Being a Merc it means reliabilty and comfort rather than speed but it`d sit at 60-65mph all day long. I keep it around 55mph for economy and also what`s the point in thrashing it if you have to pay for fuel and running costs?
Had a new Avon tyre on the front (less than 2,000 miles) plus all other tyres are A1, including 3 Michelins and spare is legal and not punctured.
In the right hands this truck will pay for itself within a month without working it full time. Scrap prices are high again plus if you buy/sell your own vehicles it`s invaluable then there`s recovery work on top.
Extremely reluctant sale, as I say it`s been absolutely brilliant but I need a larger and newer truck for some forthcoming work.
Faults: no power steering (it`s a real man`s truck!), door bottoms and inner bonnet lip want welding/filling or `glassing. Door hinge area is going to need welding soon both sides and maybe some on the inner wings too. Exhaust is loud VERY loud but I have a brand new one here still in the box ready to fit. Pre-fuel filter jumped ship and has been bypassed, again have one here to fit. MOT has expired, these jobs may want doing before it`ll pass again (exhaust certainly will) and as always you might find some other jobs need doing too but nothing major that I can think of).
Fuel pump assembly wants fitting on better though truck is running fine and always has. I`d also give it a service if I was keeping it, just the basics-i.e filters and oil. Being a Merc there so reliable they just keep plodding on.
Price: well, it has about 7 months tax remaining on it (which is included) and if you book an MOT you could drive it home. Bearing in mind the basic shell without the back, winch, ramps, lights etc, etc etc will export for quite possibly over a grand and the back alone is worth a few hundred quid as is the winch I want £2000 for it as it stands.
If I don`t find a replacement vehicle as good as this then it`ll be withdrawn from sale. It`s pointless selling it for the sake of it because I`ll never find one as good again for the money.
Pictures to follow (perhpas Re-an would be good enough to add some of the ones he has of it).
Located near Chester, Cheshire. One mile from M53 and A55, three miles from M56 and about 25 miles from the M6 by Stoke (J15) or the M6 by Warrington. Any pro inspection is welcome.
