Hi all, first post so be gentle. A friend recommended to take a look at this sight (He has a mint series 1, Mark 1 golf GTI). I must say i'm already hooked on the "Ebay Cars" thread ;D Anyway, I used to have a Mint Mark 3 Capri 2.0S in Black, with a Mark 3 2.8 and another 2.0S not quite so mint. Unfortunatly I then got married and had to go sensible and currently have a Peugeot 406 Diesel Estate! However my wife has noticed i'm miserable as sin since selling my Black Beauty and has agreed that I can get myself another "classic" car to play with. The budget is a measly £1500 although I can probably fiddle her and scrape another £500 on top. So £2k max. Question is then, what do I get? Money will be available in 1 week. I'd love another capri but finding a nice one that doesnt need the front wings replacing and the back arches cutting out for this money is getting difficult. Therefore anything classic (Only past 1970 though) or near classic or even what my possibly become a classic is in the frame. Options I thought of so far are: Fiat X19 Triumph TR7 Morris marina Austin Allegro Austin Princess/Ambassador Renault Fuego Toyota MR2 Mark 1 Scirocco My question to you all then is what would you choose if one of these or what else would you think of? I'd prefer a clean body over clean interior or mechanics. Surface rust I can live with but Rot is a no no. Help is appreciated

Your lucky day, my car is on your list. I'll know tomorrow if its for sale. a price around £800, still chewing on it though... Hi welcome by the way. boring cars are no fun (obviously)!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Welcome to the forum!
Out of your preferences, I'd have to say that if rot is an issue, I'd forget the Fiat...having said that anything will rot if it's neglected, but your budget would stretch to first-class examples of any of these cars, it just depends what you want out of it.....obviously a TR7/MR2/X19 would be dynamically years ahead of a Marina Allegro or Princess, but they are much simpler to maintain and cheaper to run. All of them would be easy enough to find parts for, except the Fuego...
I think I'd plump for the Scirocco out of that lot...great to drive, bomb-proof mechanicals and not as yet subject to the scene tax that Golfs are sometimes cursed with.
You have a dilemma on your hands, but it's a dilemma I'm envious of!!

Forgive my stupidness but is that just a shadow or is one of your wings blue/grey? No you eyes are not playing tricks! I wanted to get the car done and MOT'd before Retro Car show this year, the wing got lost in post so no time to paint the curse word, other work included cutting rust out. I'm happy to PM details if you are intersted, if you are just curious thats no prob too. welcome to the pack. enough photos for now!
