A bit obsucre but I though it worth a try.... Anyone got a SAAB 900/99 (pre 87ish) brake disc or two lying about? Condition not really important. I need one to start investigating the possibility of use on a 60's era BMC

Front or rear? Please don't say front cos I just dumped a couple!
Rear I have two old ones - old as in need a slight surface grind, plenty of thickness.

That's just about typical isn't it Truth is I don't know whether front or rear. Any chance you could measure their diameter, thickness and overall depth and even post a photo up? Cheers

Best pics I have at the moment: Rear: Front: Specs from my book: Front: O/D 276mm Thickness: 12.7mm new, min after grinding 11.7mm Rear: O/D 267.5mm Thickness: 10.5mm new, min after grinding 9.5mm Should be able to get the rest of the measurements for the rears no problem, fronts however the only ones I have are on the car, so measuring won't be easy.

Now for some real SAAB geek talk ah.. hem..... ;D
There are three types of saab 900/99 front brake disc pre 1987 all front handbrake . There is a 1977-1982 taper front bearing type . Then two latter ones from 1982 . There is a very rare 1986-1987 vented front that used wider girling calipers The thing you should really know is Ive prob got all the dimension somewhere aswell as the discs themselves .
SAAB 99 does uses the same discs/ calipers aswell.
Did you know the calipers are supposedly modded p6 rover rears !.

Fantastic info guys. I imagine I would be after 82-87 fronts if fronts are indeed what I need. Not bothered about calipers as I'm intending using something else, and I don't need a second handbrake! I'lll have a measure up tomorrow and then maybe I'll know more about what I need

I thought about mentioning the other two, but as we don't know if it's front or rear to look for, I thought I'd stick with the simple bit to start with ;D The earliest type, if used with Saab hubs is a pig to change as you have to strip the whole hub down and also replace the wheel bearing. The vented ones are nice, but just try and find the calipers!

I'm mid essex so possibly cheaper to post? Weighed on one our super accurate kitchen scales and it's about 4.5kg. Give or take a bit... Standard parcels is £8.74 if it's between 4 and 6kg. Dug one out the garage: www.saabcentral.com/phpgallery/Allsorts/DSCF0800 (and 2 pics following, click on the little arrows). Overall width is about 2 1/2" (couldn't find anything except an old plastic set square, so not an accurate measurement!). Oh, could also probably russle up a (probably scrap) caliper if you happened to need one (not trying to offload my scrap on you honest!)

Just found this thread going on in secret in here!
Seth, I reckon those Saab discs might be a bit too deeply inset, judging by the photos. If they go over the A60 hub (which I reckon is the most important factor) but are too deeply inset, maybe you could space them out to clear the back plate area.
Let me know how you get on with this as you are doing exactly what I was going to do!

Try you local motor factor bradi discs italian or euro car parts or in surrey nordic car componets . ;D

If they're about 2 1/2" deep overall they mgiht be too deep but I'm not so sure. I'll post up why in the other thread to keep all the tech in one place. Nutcase, Where in Essex? I might well be headed over to Canvey Island during christmas/new year week some time. Otherewise it might make more sense for me to buy a new one if they're so cheap. I could sell on if they end up unsuitable. Brookesaab, thanks too for your help. I'll post some dimensions in the other thread.

As I said, I think the depth issue could possibly be overcome with a spacer. The critical point is if the disc will go over the A60 hub. Mike
