FREE! Mk2 Polo Breadvan
Here we have a 1983 Volkswagen Polo 1100 manual Breadvan which time, space and a new car forces me to pass it on. It was my first car which I have owned for 3 years and has only ever let me down on one occasion when the alternator failed - which was replaced with a secondhand part. I am the third owner and it has done nearly 66,000 genuine miles (backed with some service history) and is MOT'd until the 30th of September and Taxed until the end of that month. Unfortunately the petrol tank has started to leak from the filler neck when the car is parked on a hill, and there is a suspected fault with the brake master cylinder but other than that this car is a very solid, rust free and reliable little car. The front left wheel bearing needs replacing, and I have brought a wheel bearing kit (£27) to go with the car but have not had time to fit it.
Bad Points
In the 3 years I have had the car I have tried to keep it tidy and have rectified some dings it came with but there are still some areas that could benefit from tidying. The bonnet and roof skin do have some dents and the left of the front valance / front left wing is also a bit tatty due to an encounter with a muddy bank last autumn. This damage is mearly cosmetic - not too noticeable and the front wing and bonnet could easily be replaced with parts from a scrap yard (both bolt on). Other than that the car is in very tidy shape although it could do with the paint tidying up in some places (after I learnt how to spray metallic paint on it) - it still occasionally attracts some positive comments from people. The radio needs wiring in and speakers fitting (did not come with radio when new and still have the blanking plate). There is also a very small windscreen chip behind the rear view mirror which its had since I brought the car and has never affected the MOT or got any worse in the time I have had it. This could easily been repaired or replaced if you wanted (although it really doesn't need it) and as the screen isn't bonded it it could be easily carried out at home. These are all the bad points and imperfections, although all the car really needs is the fuel filler neck repairing and the brake master cylinder looking at to be pressed back into service as a respectable old car.
Good points:
Having only covered 66,000 miles the mechanics are the car (except whats been mentioned) are in brilliant shape like you would expect with a VW and the car drives very sweetly with no carburettor problems (a common fault on old polos). The bodywork is also incredibly rot free thanks to VWs thorough rust proofing when new. I have replaced the original wheels with ones from my old early Polo Coupe and have also fitted the centre console and steering wheel from the same car.
Recent work thats been carried out on the car includes:
New cam belt fitted professionally about 200 miles ago
New front left tyre and tracking adjusted professionally only 500 miles ago
New back box fitted within last 1500 miles
I also have a selection of body and trim spares including front bumper, grill ( with red striping), steering wheel, door cards, seat belts, lights and other items I removed from my old polo coupe (also 1983) before it was scrapped which will go with the car.
The car was used regually until two weeks ago when I purchased a new car as I did not have the time to repair it myself - If I had the space I would love to keep the car and repair it but living where I do I'm sure my neighbours would not appreciate it.
All in all its a very nice little car that has served me very well and just needs a little attention before it serves its next owner. Bearing in mind its 23 years old its in fantastic shape and would look fantastic lowered with a few gentle modifications enhancing its pure shape. So if anyone is interested in a free car please PM me. I will also be putting it on ebay but could remove it if anyone from retro rides was interested as it deserves to go to someone who can make good use of it (which is why I've rambled on so long about it). The car is located in Okehampton just of the A30 dual carriage way and would ideally need to be towed away due to the brakes being spongy although it could be driven if the brake fluid level was regularly checked on its journey.
