I was walking home when a chap turned in front of me in a brand new Golf Gti. First one I,ve seen in the flesh. Actually its quite nice, certainly up on the Mk 4 (mine) and 3 (my last one - oops).
Anyway, the interesting bit... how it sounded. Not at all like a modern car. It was almost as if VW's engineers had been listening to tuned Mk 1's and tried to get the same sound. It actually sounds rather good, even at town speeds! My Mk4 is all turbo muffled and sounds like nothing at all.
Well done those boys. Obviously it's still rubbish and modern, but until yesterday I was determined we would (at last), get a different car than a GOlf GTi for the daily drive, have done Mk2,3 and 4 now), but now I'm thinking, hmmmm.

I'll be sticking with my Mk1 thanks - original is still best, even better when it's got more power under the bonnet ;D

New version does seem to be ticking alot of boxes. Just a shame they'll all get wasted on fart-knockers with their company car allowances.

I've driven a few of them new Golfs and I have to say they are really nice to drive. I haven't had the pleasure of a GTi though. If I absolutely HAD to have a new car, then I reckon it'd be a VW (Golf probably) or an Audi. They're such well built cars and feel really solid. But it'd be a retro every time for me

Yeah, Although I've had three Gti's now as I own my own business and therefore have to pay for the costs of a car and do quite a high milage on client visits the Golf just keeps making economic sense.
price wise I could have an Impreza but at the mpg they do I'd be bust in a week!
i'd also love a 156 but the 4th time I called a client to explain that I had broken down again they'd start to get annoyed!

I was lucky enough to go to the Mk 5 GTI launch at Donnington just before christmas and as I work on Golfs etc all day at a VW main dealer I wasn't really expecting much of a suprise but when we got to drive it back to back with the new BMW 1 series 2.0 sport I was seriously impressed with it, for me the best thing about it is the lastest generation traction control which no longer cuts all the power/fun out of it, but now actually lets you loon around ;D ;D and if anyone is thinking about one you have to go for the cloth trim as it's so retro-cool oh yeah and the BMW is wibblepoo

Hey I found it on www.snopes.com/photos/commercials/vwpolo.asp . That's pretty tasteless really, but I almost like it! It's wrong but the guys who made it are pretty brave for letting it out, I'd imagine they won't be doing much more work for VW in the future! ;D ;D ;D

will all this talk of Golfs can i remind you all of the Skoda Octavia! 2k less than a golf, same car, same quality the polo advert is funny. so what if it is not politically correct, someone could get offended with the Golf Gti advert as he was hugging a lamp post!

Not quite.... the Octavia RS (180bhp) is/was? based on the stodgy Mk4 Golf/old Audi A3 platform and uses the previous generation 1.8 turbo lump where as the New Golf Gti is based on the latest generation platform currently shared with Audis A3 and the VW Touran. Engine wise it has the Latest 2.0FSI Turbo lump and comes with the option of the superb Audi derived DSG gearbox (first fitted to the 3.2 TT in 2003) It also shares the fully electric steering (no mechanical drain on engine power)and control blade rear suspension compared to the Octavias fluid PAS and beam rear axle.

ok, so, right now the vRS is lacking, but the rest of the range is the same. With the new Octavia. Don't know if there will be a vRS mk.2 rumours say there won't Shame, coz whether you like SKODAs or not- it is a fine looking car:
