Well pays your money and takes your choice, I suppose. Just because your going to only use something off-road 'only' (something I can never get my head round... as you need to get it TO the mud first!), it's still worth having something that is road legal. If it's got an MoT, at least you know it's not going to snap the chassis in two when the going gets rough! Best bet would be to look out for a little Suzuki 410 or something. Cheap as chips and pretty fun off road. 'Cheap' land rover's don't really exist - buy the best you can afford

what you want is a Lada Niva 4x4
those little beasts will go anywhere, had a mate who used to trial one and he was forever pulling Landy's etc out that had got stuck

They obv. weren't driving their landies right!!!
In all fairness the Niva is a stunning machine for the mud, but it's on-road manners are appalling, and it drinks like a fish.... so why would you pick one over a land rover (also pretty naff on the road and thirsty) which has the kudos a Niva will never have....
Even a (gasp!) Vitara can be a good tool. I know a load of thme got painted pink and swathed in plastic for the chigwell tanning salon brigade, but lots of the lads round here use them for lamping as they are more manouvreable than a LR or RR etc.

vitaras break too often, nivas don't have appaling road manners, i drove mine like a rally car on 175/80r16 tyres, it performed better than all other 4x4s ive driven.
i find land rovers cramped, curse word driving position and no elbow room, something nivas don't suffer from.
be different, go for a niva.

Gotta agree SJ's rock , my very first car was an 1983 SJ410 soft top on an A plate, super early one with the cooler dash and drums all round. I actually have an M plate SJ413 Samurai at the moment but I havn't mentioned it before
