Bit of a long shot this one! My old chap's been offered a nearly-free 2000 Tata Loadbeta 2.0TDi 4x4 twin cab truck. We know they're pretty curse word, but it'd be a useful motor for parts hauling and towing the odd Mini / Sierra / Kadett etc. Trouble is it's got no cylinder head as the original one cracked and the owner didn't think to ask for it back from the engineers' place! We can't find a head anywhere. Anyone got any ideas? Been offered a complete non-turbo engine from a Gurkha, but no-one seems to know if that'll bolt to the 4x4 gearbox (plus it's dearer than the complete truck!) If it were 2WD we'd just stick a Rover V8 in there.... So if any RR-ers have experience of these dodgy Indian contraptions, please give me a shout!

Apparently it's either a Peugeot engine, or it's Peugeot "based" depending who you believe. I haven't seen it as the truck's miles away....Reckon I'll have to get the owner to email some pics across.
Personally I'd buy now, think later, then bosh any old block in to make it go. But Dads do tend to worry about these things.

i seem to recall the Tata being Mercedes based.
I remember seeing 1 that had been fitted with the Merc 190 front end (straight swap i believe) and i understood the engine to be a Merc diesel.
Correct me if i'm wrong

Hmm, I'm not sure.
In their ads they used to have a front view of the Tata truck (which does look very mercedes-like, even down to the badge) and the slogan was ‘the inspiration is obvious’ but I’m not certain there really is a Merc connection. The Ssangyong Musso 4wd thing is the only non-MB vehicle I’m aware of which has a Merc diesel motor.

I had always thought that they used a mercedes engine but after having a quick google a lot of places say "peugeot derived" but I have found this site mercedesgwagen.galeon.com/I do know know parts prices were pretty expensive when I was considering one a while ago. They seem a pretty cheap pickup but I have seen quite a few for sale due to gearbox problems or rusty chassis. If its nearly free its probably worth getting just to have a look and see if a peugeot head will fit. Apparently the top speed of the turbo is 77mph and the non turbo struggles at 60 . So performance is gonna be pretty similar to an old land rover. Try one of the online places like www.247spares.co.ukI have had good results from using these in the past. Just send an email saying what you want and then different scrapyards will contact you to give you prices.

Cheers guys, it's definitely a "semi-Peugeot" lump in there so I've been on 247spares and breakersyard.com. Hopefully my old chap will take the truck anyway, it's got to be worth a gamble IMHO!

The engine is based on the Peugeot XUD engine but not the same as Peugeot/Citroen units as its has a slightly larger capacity. I don't think it was ever available in another european sold vehicle.

Saw a TD (51 reg) being worked on yesterday, sure does look like a random engine, not Peugeot of Merc, this one was in for a new alternator... At a cost of £500 for the alternator alone that's how much they cost. Check it. And this was a reliable two man back street garage, not a dealer

Yeah Bryn, that doesn't surprise me. The garage my bro works at put some rear springs on one recently at a cost of £1,000, plus the truck sat there immobile for weeks while they waited for the parts. Haven't found a cylinder head, only a complete "sold as seen" engine for £1,000 If we'd got that much to splash out we probably wouldn't be looking at a Tata....

Any pics of the engine or engine bits?

Same as those SSanyong Musso`s I had considered one of those as a cheap tow vehicle as they seem pretty chepa for what they are but parts prices are unbelievable.
