Anybody been lucky enough to have seen the 'Dakar or Bust' on Men+Motors on Sky? A load of teams do the Dakar rally, sounds fair enough, however the rules- The car the drive must have been baught for £100 and then they can spend £15 (I think) doing it up Absolutly hilarious, theres Hillman Hunters, 2CVs, Lada Nivas, Ford Granadas and 10's of others, all over heating and generaly blowing up in the middle of the desert ;D One team used a tennis ball in todays program as a shock absorber (this was after one of the guys was ironing his cloathes on top of the car while traveling at 50+ mph ;D ;D ;D

Saw that program a few days back, I think it's about the first Plymouth Dakar a few years back, isn't it? They run it every year, and I really want to enter it some year!

in an imp? that would kick ass ;D though seriously, some of us Retro Rides lads should enter! All the cars are certainly retro, great fun and can do a bit of word of mouth advertising for the forum at the same time as having huge amounts of fun doing 100mph through a desert

Maybe we'd even meet the guys who're doing all those ebay scams!

Ladas do very well as well, but you can get a respectable Volvo 240 or 740 for £100. The 740, if it's not neglected, can be unbelievably reliable and would cope with the desert well. It is heavy, but that interior is very comfortable and the heating and air conditioning systems are incredible in Volvos of that age so you could drive long distances in the desert with ease and come out at the other end feeling relatively refreshed, you'd be glad of the good aircon in the desert I'd bet!
