I've rebuilt the driveshafts on the '77 Mini (painted, cleaned and rebuilt the CV jonts and pot joints and new gaitors) and have used the plastic cable ties supplied with the gaitors to secure them but my friend said you need metal ties to pass an MoT. Do I?
I haven`t heard of this before, I used garden wire as temporary substitute before and passed an MoT fine

I've always used plastic cable ties and had no problems. I would think metal ones would cause more problems - cutting thru the CV boots, rusting... Nah, dunno where your mate got his info from but I don't think he's right.

Nope plastic cable ties will do. I had some concerns about this but my mother (who used to work in the trade) and uncle agreed that plastic is the "industry standard"

Tighten some cable ties round your mate's neck to demonstrate to him that plastic is just as good as metal.
Whats the advantage of metal cable ties anyway? What a load of curse word.

Cheers for that, now all I've got to do is rebuild the hubs, replace a brake pipe, weld a front wing on, bolt in the cage, fix the indicator stalk I broke fitting the cage, adjust the ride height at the front....................
