Don't like a lot of the cars there.................but there are some awesome touches and details amongst all that. Stuff that when applied to the right car (ok, and maybe not surrounded by so much tat) could be awesome. I'm with you on this Alistair, a trip to a non scene show every now and then can provide inspiration (and quite a few 'WTF where they thinking' moments). Thanks for taking the time and effort to go, take pics and share. Mmmm, black and tan, proper classy and the standard of finish looks top notch.

A good day out by the look of the photo's. You have to admire people's dedication and workmanship if not their taste
Thanks for the 205 pictures AK, i'm nearly there with mine

You have to admire the workmanship - then wonder how much of it is the owner's and how many are chequebook jobs from start to finish.
But I suposoe that keeps the pros in business.
It does make me wonder what would be the result if the retro scene found the ca$h or commitment to turn out the same number of cars at the same level these guys have done. Seriously these are, on my breif observation, built to the same standards as a lot of the big buck street rods are. A lot of "our" cars are in reality built with a lot of enthusiasm and creative ideas but fall short in the detail and finish stakes... (obviously this is a generalisation, I can thin of some very well finished retros, but they are more the exception than the rule)
Ditto there are a LOT of badly done chavved up charriots hanginng out round MacDonnalds but this isn't about them, this is about the well done stuff (when the personal prefference/taste element is removed)
Very few of these cars are the sort of thing I would drive, basically because of the base material. Now if I got my hands on something modern like a Monaro, 300C, ZT260 or whatever then I might be a bit more interested in carrying some of those ideas over.
In fact you could apply some of those tricks nicely to older metal. I've seen a few 60s pickups in the yank mags which are doing just that. I have even seen Cadillacs and the like done, and the mags over there call it "21st century custom" or "nu-millenium". No reason you couldn't do similar with a Hillman Superminx or Maxi or whatever.

This is what I love about stepping out of your scene and into another one,.. you can pick up ideas. Whilst I wouldn't want the retro scene to turn into a deep pocketed arms race to create cars. It'd be nice to have a spread of budget cars through to big bucks cars. I guess we have a bit of this because we sort of encompass the VW (air and water), hot rod and drift scenes, which all have some big budget rides. Really what you can take away though is not the money aspect, but the detail aspect. Details are the difference between a cool ride that'll turn heads and a genre/style defining ride that people will want to emulate and improve upon.

Gold digger is great. if it wasnt just a 406 under there i'd be even more excited. I doubt we'll see adverts/boasts like this on ProjectFamilyDragster! A disclaimer maybe. Some really good ideas, and well finished stuff you are right. I like bits of what I see and some of the stances and kits are a bit but all good effort. Have you any more pics of the vinyl bonneted Pug or did I miss it. looks ok at that angle. As for orange, used to be my fave but I'm a bit bored of it now! ;D

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

You can put a V8 in a Viva or whatever and have it running in a couple of months if you stick at it. However if you want detail to the level of "well finished" cars then suddenly you can see why some rods are 5, 6, 7 years or more in the making.... Or you get out a loan and pay someone to work 9-5 on it for you.

Guess these photos were taken on the Sunday, as there are a few cars in the photo selection above that I didn't recognise. That Golf looks very cool.
My Benz was on the Max Power stand all day Saturday, and seemed to go down pretty well, but there were so many brainless idiots about the place. "Yeah, dats fat mate, datz da law init" (complete with loads of stupid hand gestures). Morons.
Best cars for me were two euro style things. One was a brown Punto, super smooth and slammed over polised Schmidt's, and there was also a little green Lupo with a beige roof dropped again over stretched Schmidt's, but with beige centres. Turbo'd too and owned by a nice lad who really seemed to know his stuff. Will post pics if can work out how to get them off my new phone.
That Merc thing was apparently based on a R-class - one of those awful people carrier things. Beautiful scuptured body and some amazing trick bits (30's on the rear too!), but they should have left it slammed all day - when we looked they'd pumped the air suspension up, and you could see all the rusting welds underneath. Cool concept though.

Must admit I do like the 'Bentley' Golf.
'Gold digger' awful though - what a waste of a 406 Coupe, IMO one of the best looking cars of the 1990s.

Whilst much of this goes way past what I consider tasteful or appealing('bad boy' bonnets - why???), I can really appreciate the standard of work that goes into some of this stuff. Again if its well done I can appreciate the effort, if not the article. For me there's too much 'extreme' in some of these cars, stuff like saxos just look daft with ultra big rims(17" and above) dragging on their bump stops. But as ever whatever floats your boat, do it, but then if credibility was a concern I wouldn't own a hearse! ;D ;D ;D

Hibisc-OOOOOF! I have a serious soft spot for hibiscus... *n The attention to detail on these flowers was rather special. Ran up the the bonnet, inside the firewall, dash and up to the back of the rear view mirror. Very well put together Beetle.

Cool pics AK. I bet that XE powered Corolla get the JDM boy hot under the collar ;D ^^^^on a boring side note that car is local to me, owned by a guy called Vince (don't know him personaly) but iirc its got a D16 with a turbo conversion. Nice car IMO modern styling but not too over the top.
