I appear to have misplaced my wiring diagram for my dixie horns.
I'm guessing it's nice and simple though?
I have....
The compressor thing(?? no idea if this is actually what it is, but it's the bit that feeds the air horns with air) A switch Some wire
I'm guessing I also need a relay? -What sort of relay and how do I wire it in?
I assume the switch goes between live feed and relay? Or does it go between the horny bit and earth? Does it even matter?
Can I see if it works by just bodging some wire direct from a 12V laptop type adapter/plug to the horny compressory bit?
Cheers me dears
(Yes I know that they are naughty and that I will get told off if I get caught, but it will make me laugh, and even if I'm sad, the most important thing is that it makes me laugh.)

replace headlights with horn obviously you need a feed to the switch aswel Me and a mate got a free cheeseburger each from McDonalds after we used his dixie horn to get the drive thru attendants attention almost paid for itself already ;D

Nice one ta. Looks poifect. Any idea if that type of relay has a specific name/type or will it be obvious when I go to the shop to get one? For a minute, before the photo had loaded I thought you were suggesting that I take the headlights out of the car and use a horn to navigate at night

"well I did beep officer!" ;D most 4 pin relays have the same terminal numbers but I can't remember the rating we used on my mates car, I think it came with the kit

Can the battery feed just come from the ignition barrel or something like that? The battery is in the back and all the wiring runs through the sills.... really can't be arsed with that!

live feed can come from anywhere, as long as the wiring and any switches it runs through can take the amps that the compressor will draw, if your lucky it will be written on it.
You can run things without a relay, the idea though is that the heavy duty wiring needed for large loads is kept to a minimum and you only need a lightweight switch and wiring run up to the dash to activate the relay, which then switches the heavier current on to activate your horn/lights/cattleprod.
Ford light switches from the 80's cars were well known for melting when spotlights are wired straight into the main beam feed with no relay because all the current for the lights runs through the switch first and it gets hot.

Hmmmmm. So I need a thick wire going from the battery to the relay then? That could be a pain to be honest! Stupid rear engined car The switch I have is a bit ickle, so i'm guessing that a relay is the best way to go.

If you have to run a wire anyway, i'd run a nice heavy duty one (fused near the battery) into a junction box at the front of the car under the bonnet, that way you have a nice ready made feed up front in case you ever want to add anything else, adda ciggy lighter socket and you could run a drinks cooler in the front for example.
Its something i quite often add when I'm putting my amps into the boot of a car, has come in handy a few times.

Yeah that makes perfect sense tbh. Means I've got the provision there if I want to add anything at all really. Was thinking about relaying headlights when i go over to halogen anyway. Popup, you're from Brentwood aren't you? Busy tomorrow Hahaha!

Just pick up the brown wire on the ignition switch for your battery feed, and use the horn feed to trigger the relay if your doing away with the original horn.

My thoughts exactly....get rid of the little one and just wire the dixie in its place ;D thats fine as long as 30 year old wiring can cope with the much higher current draw of an electric motor without melting.

Righty ho.............. Well, today I started bright and breezy as I had lots of other jobs to do during the day as well.... check out a car for polodraggin, get some tyres, that sort of shizzle. Popped up to Hellfrauds because I remembered seeing a crimping/electricery set in there the other day. Took one look at it.... no ta! Instead I picked up just a crimping tool instead. Now, I remember hearing that when wiring, it really is worth getting a decent crimping tool as it makes the world of difference...... So I got the Halfords "professional" one instead. Not sure that counts but hey ho! Next... off to the motorfactors. Came back with some 30A wire, a whole host of spade connectors and a few other bits and bobs. Got home and made a start. Started drilling and fitting horns, the compressor, the relay. There was a spare terminal on the starter solenoid so I took the big 30A wire from there, straight into a 30A fuse. In through the sills, under the carpet.... about half a bloody yard short of the bulkhead! curse word. Off to the motorfactors for another 3 metres! At this point more stuff got wired in. The switch got broken which meant a trip into town again for another. The horns all got connected, it was going great. Need bullet connectors for the earths.... damn. Trip to town numero 4! Now, I was happy, everything was done and I was ready to fire this baby up........... This was the most dissapointing moment of my life. Turns out, my kit was a dud. I got the horns for dixie horns, duke of hazards stylee. But I got the compressor for La Cucaracha. Not a happy bunny. So I goes off to a local field so I can have a fiddle with the order and see if I can get some sort of respectable tune out of it without annoying the neighbours.... I got stuck in the mud so deep that the mud came up to the sills. Took too poxy hours to get it out. This, my friends, is not cool. It was so stuck, that a lovely shiny 06 Audi summat or other 2.0TDi started to burn it's clutch trying to pull me out! My nice new bucket seat... covered in mud My nice clean interior... covered in mud Every piece of wood I could lay my hands on... covered in mud Me and my clothes... covered in mud The trolley jack... covered in mud You get the jist. So now, everything in the world I own is covered in stupid gooey mud, and I don't have musical air horns that play a random selection of notes. Not a tune. AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I want to keep the standard horn and have the dixie horns operated by a seperate switch, hence the extra wiring etc.
