I've been thinking about getting a speed trap detector. Are they any good? I'm only looking at a cheapy Snooper device - they don't seem to go for much on ebay. But is that because they are curse word and a waste of money?!
I know speed trap jammers are against the law but I think detectors are still legal.

detectors are legal, but basically pish. The problem is that by the time your gadget has detected the incoming beams from most hand=held devices, PC plod has already got your speed reading and your too late. For fixed gatsos, their uefull range depends on conditions and luck. In use I found it to give not quite enough warning on an empty road unless you were willing to do an emergency stop kind of move to slow before the camera. They work a little better in traffic as the beams are reflected off cars infront of you back to the detector, which improves the range somewhat. Never tried one near a truvel camera, but id imagine it would work ok as the beam is facing towards your aproach.
Also, All manner of ther stuff sets them off round town. Pedestrain crossing sensors, shop door sensors etc.
Most satnavs will have fixed camera locations which is more usefull in unfamiliar areas, and its often possible to get a daily update of where mobile units are placed from your local road safety website.

Agree with Dave. Sat navs with the fixed locations are useful, if only to serve as a "keep an eye on your speed" thing. I tend to avoid trouble by not speeding but especially in moderns, it's easy for your speed to creep up.

Thanks guys, you've saved me some money! I don't tend to speed, but as you say DW sometimes the needle does creep up. Especially annoying are the average speed cameras when in heavy traffic - I end up watching the speedo rather than looking at whether the guy in front has slammed his brakes on. But then radar detectors wouldn't really do much in those situations anyway. I've been thinking about SatNav for a while as it's become cheaper. But still, it's £80 that could be spent on making the Benz better! ;D

Navigo for £69.99 - been playing with one at work, with about 10 minutes fiddling we ditched the pish standard software and installed both MioMap (my favourite) and TomTom6 on it. Both have updatable camera locations with warnings. It's not as good as a £150 Tomtom unit but it does the job perfectly. Personally I got a phone with GPS, and installed satnav on it. Cost me minus £60 and it's always with me 'just in case'....
