Me and me bruv went for a jaunt to the scrapyard today. I took a few pics... ^ A ruddy Yugo Zastava thingummy! Judging by the amount of rust I believe this car to be a 2006 model. ^ Early-ish Uno. I think that grille is factory, isn't it?! ^ Skoda Estelle 120 (I think) brought back memories of my Rapid. ^ Scimitar was far gone, looking sorry for itself. ^ The rustiest Prelude ever. Looks like it was fished from a canal. ^ The 'ludes distant cousin. These are often in the scrapyards. I quite like 'em! ^ Very early Porsche 924... there were at least three 924's there. ^ It broke my heart to see this Datsun in there. There was not a trace of rust on it. The body was arrow straight (apart from forklift damage). Interior was clean as a whistle. Only had 40k-odd on the clock... what a waste. ^ Another immaculate retro. Also rust free. Probably some poor old dude who's been suckered into buying some crappy new Zafira and trading his old Cav in on that "green" trade-in scam scheme Vauxhall are running. Another sickening waste of a perfectly good car, and the environment gets even more polluted as yet another new car is built to replace it. Didn't actually buy anything... just messed around in amongst old cars! It's like a park, but better. And without any kids.

i like walking around scrappies but they don't like it if you don't actually have anything to go in for ;D
it annoys me how some people scrap cars that have good bodywork, even if it was broken for spares its a bette life than dumped in a scrappies

Yugo is a 311 I think.. 3-door 1100cc. there was a 511 and a 513 (1300cc) but no 313 IIRK. There was also the 411 and 413, which were 4-door saloons like the Fiat 128 they were based on.
(I worked at a Yugo dealer in in the late 80's...)

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

it annoys me how some people scrap cars that have good bodywork, even if it was broken for spares its a bette life than dumped in a scrappies Isn't the point of a scrappies that they go there to have the good bits removed i.e. be broken for spares!?!? I love scrappies you can walk around - unfortunately that isn't the way the wind is blowing these days, far too many yards are either "dismantlers" that simply bale everything over 10 years old straight away, or worse still frag yards that just bale the whole lot! Friends of mine own a "traditional" breakers in Milton Keynes (MK Auto Recycling in New Bradwell) and apart from Poles & Africans, very few people visit the for bits any more despite there being a good selection of cars laid out ready & single stacked. Other than selling engines & boxes, most of their money is in collecting and pressing stuff these days. Anybody going to post up pictures from Balby Motors in Doncaster then? Now that place really is a treasure trove - worth a drive up for a look around if nothing else!

Am I the only one here who has thought 'The car I am taking bits off in the scrapyard is better than the one I am going to fit the bits to?'
Ha ha!

my mum used to have a datsun cherry, until the front suspension decided to fly through the bonnet, was a nice car until then, I like where someones tried to open the 'boot' of the Estelle the wrong way haha, I made kids think my Estelle's had no engine and you had to press the pedals really quick to move it haha

Whilst on the subject of suspension and bonnets....
I borrowed my ex girlfriends Dads Mk2 Cavvy to nip to the scrapyard once. Was going to get bits to resurect my mini. The scrapyard in question was at the end of a single track farm road, bit like a rally stage.
Half way down the road is a big yump (extra points for rally terminology?). I hit it a bit too fast and the Cavalier died. The exhaust was sticking out from the rear an extra few feet and the car looked lower. I popped the bonnet to see why the thing wouldnt restart. When I pulled the bonnet catch the car dropped about a foot. I opened the bonnet to find the struts had ripped themselves out of the inner wings! The reason it wouldnt start was obvious when I saw the shape of the sump (and bits of main bearing through it!)
Wasnt popular that day!

There is a 205 cabrio there but there's virtually nowt left of it. Probably a couple of regular 205s there too I'd think. Wilko - it's a real shame that traditional scrappies are disappearing. This one is always pretty busy, and hopefully will be staying around for many years to come. I don't like the dismatlers yards - a lot of the stuff I need is really obscure, or often I'm not really sure what I'm looking for until I see it, then I think "this might be ideal!" and buy it.

I miss old scrapyards too. Two that spring to mind where I grew up were 'Ivor the fiver' owned by a welsh guy (actually called Dyffed!) where everything was £5 and Campbells. Campbells used to open at 8am every morning and close as soon as the owner had enough to go to the bookies and pub! Some days it would be open until 7pm other days it would be closed by 2!

Further to the suspension/bonnet thing. Many moons ago I had a 3.0 royale which, like dtuning I unwisely tried to yump, resulting in a similar bonnet catch release/lowering car effort. The strut imprints in the bonnet were quite impressive Albertlooms looks like a great scrappy, price of steel usually dictates many older cars just get fragged straight away in other scrappies.

i quite often use G & R Harris scrappy near chichester, everything is on the ground with no piling, they will dig cars out for you and stick em on stands if u need and they are cheap. they also stick makes together in the same area, makes part finding easy! thay also have a massive variety of cars, really great place to spent an hour or so www.gharris.f9.co.uk/index.html

Most of the scrappies around here have gone sh*te ! There used to be a great one near me which you could wander around and take bits off and everything was cheap or free . Picked up a set of mk2 polo saloon square lights and grill plus the full arch kit and the alloy rocker cover plus a set of LHD spec rear lights for something like 15 quid . Sadly , the owner retired after he had a heart attack and the yard was cleared
