My mum's moggy minor 1000 is having fuel pump problems
Ignition turned on there is not the usual tic-tic-tic, which I know tends to signify burned/dirty/pitted points but I've cleaned the points and they seem free
I've had the rest apart, cleaned all terminals, checked grounds etc and can't find anything amiss. The weird thing is however, with the ignition on, and loosening the terminal screw off, then giving the cable a wiggle starts the contacts ticing but only if the wire is moved around.
My main domain is yank stuff and mechanical pumps so I'm a bit stuck for ideas, any help is appreciated
cheers!

I'm confused! Are you talking about the ticking of an electric pump, or the the points in the dizzy?

My mum's moggy minor 1000 is having fuel pump problems Ignition turned on there is not the usual tic-tic-tic SU pumps only "tic-tic" when they are pushing fuel through anyway - sat at rest with the ignition on it shouldn't really do much, with the engine running it should tic slowly, if you pull the fuel line off the carb and put it in a can, it will tick like a torettes sufferer on red bull! I use SU pumps for racing and they often seize on me when they've been sat - what I do is take the 10mm nut off the positive lug and remove the points cover, clean the points up, maually pump the little oscilating arm thingy a few times, put a new earth wire to the pump body and a decent wire to the positive lug and then run straight off a battery for about 10 seconds, then try it pumping a bit of fuel between 2 cans for a test before refitting - usually gets them going again OK for me

Hmm, is it a recent pump or the original/old one. I have had a pump that has given up the ghost even with new dual contact points fitted. Only thought I could come up with was that through age the magnets in the solenoid might have weakend so the plunger bit of the pump wouldn't work consistently. Might be that you wiggling the lead is giving voltage spokes to jump start it but it can't keep itself going. Benzboy, the ticking of an SU pump is controlled by a set of points

It used to tic for a bit as soon as you turned the ignition on, the magnet thing had crossed my mind - I don't think its an original pump but it isn't particularly recent, a good few years ago (10+ probably) my neighbour either replaced the pump or gave it a rebuild.

Coincidently my mum also has a moggy minor (but she has a van), her fuel pump caused her to break down last week, I cave the pump some physical abuse at the roadside and it hasn't been a problem since.
Cant help you though sorry.

pull the little filter on the underside of the pump out, if its jammed with crud the pump *may* stall. under the 3/4 IIRC nut at the very bottom of the pump head

ditch the su pump, they work well when they work but leave them sitting for more than a few months and the stick. Fit a Facet and a regulator and you wont go worng.
BTW did u check to make sure the diaphram hasnt persihed on your pump?

Don't think its the filter, had that all apart and the fuel inlet/outlet flow fine, no blockages and the ball valves are working
Diaphragm looks fine too

Theres 2 options fit a mechanical pump if yours has the removable plate on the back of the engine or fit the uprated electronic one from Burlen fuel systems,it looks identical to the SU pump but has electronics instead of points in it.
