Appologies that this is kinda way OT - but then it isn;t as it applies to use of forums such as our beloved R-R....
Folks, check out your workstation areas and ensure that they meet the various guidelines on ease and comfort of use. This week I was diagnosed with carpel tunnel syndrome / RSI and is all down to using PCs in badly laid out setups. I can type 3 words at a time now before I have to stop (OK I got 4 then) and its really not nice. Like fire in your wrist.
We think of the safety when grinding, welding, all that stuff (although I've taken my risks there in the past too) but these computer things are safe enough, right? LOL.
I can't use the mouse much either.
Ironically my job at work includes doing H&S assessments of peoples work areas for PC use to prevent RSI. Never did my own desk though...
So check yours out, so you can keep posting here!
The HSE website has all the stuff you need to know.

Yea, I suffered pretty badly from RSI during my stint as a graphic designer and in my 2nd/3rd years of uni. Not pleasant. ~10 years of PC use taking it's toll! We did a fair bit to prevent it too, breaks, posture excersise, gym.... It's not fun. Boss has it so chronically that sometimes it ruins the use of arm Potentially crippling. Have to be quite careful these days!

Are you sure that's just not a result of you looking at "Adult Art" websites?

I got RSI in my right arm (hey! shut up!) after a data entry job - felt like my lower arm had turned to jelly. It was really horrible! That's why I can type on the number pad almost as quickly with my left as my right hand - t'was agency work so no show = no pay!
Must get my eyes tested again. Every two years you're meant to get it done I think. Work pays for the test so no excuse not to do it!

The perfect cure I've found is owning a laptop instead of a workstation. If I find I'm getting sore joints when I'm working in my home office I'll go and sit on the sofa with the laptop on my... lap ;D. Just by moving my seating postion it completely changes my typing postion and alleviates any RSI issues. I've never had a problem since switching over

"How can you kill something that has no life?" Someone must have seen that episode of south park? And you're just as bad Whaat? You knows I is well gangsta homeslice. I can safely say I have never played world of warcraft for 10 hours straight. Or ever. That said, I do still cover everything in stickers at the age of 22. If that won't attract the ladies, I don't know what will!

Are there any early signs or is it pretty much "there you go, have a big slice o pain"? What causes it? Lack of blood, knackered muscles?

I'm not cool enough to own, or even have seen, a copy of world of warcraft Two of my housemates last year had it. Literally every day, get home, straight on it, while the rest of us sat there and listened to them call up and down stairs to each other. When they weren't playing it they were talking about it. The last computer game I got that involved in was Super Street Fighter 2 on the Megadrive ;D. Sat on my living room floor cross-legged once, playing it until I'd completed it as 5 characters. I could barely stand up after that...

It's just caused by too much of the same action, repeated. For me, it made my lower arm swell slightly and my the muscles controlling the tendons to my fingers ached and it all felt "mushy."

Heat from laptop right on top of your little swimmers... Thats why prettymuch iuniversally manufacturers of laptops call them "notebooks" now.

Alistair: You might want to seriously think about trying to learn to use a Dvorak keyboard. I learnt to use one some years ago, and found it took maybe a week to learn the new layout, and it was MUCH more comfortable. You just don't have to move your fingers so much to type.
I've never had very good joints, so I get the odd twinge in my fingers when I type, but I am back to using qwerty now, since I didn't think it was serious enough in my case to bother with Dvorak.
"ergonomic" keyboards are a load of rubbish if you ask me. Most of the designs are expensive, hard to use, and none of the ones I have used offer any real improvement. I've typed enough to have worn the letters off at least one keyboard, and found that the important thing for your wrists is actually having enough desk depth to push the keyboard back and get your elbows on the desk. Then all you need is the seat at the right height, and that sorts it. Wrist supports etc are utterly useless, the entire forearm wants support.
Not teaching grandmother to suck eggs or anything, but I do remember the last time I read the H&S recommendations for computer users, there was nothing about elbow support at all. Plenty of good advice on everything else, but a bit lacking there. Just saying what has worked for me really.

What are the symptoms of RSI? Are there any early signs or is it pretty much "there you go, have a big slice o pain"? What causes it? Lack of blood, knackered muscles? As Dolly says, repeating the same movements over (or maintainig the same bad posture) cause fatigue and strain. Mine feels like a sprained wrist, but with like fire in it. Plus if I use the mouse for long I get a pain which runs upt he tendon tothe elbow, as well as the "ball" of my thumb and the tendons which do my little finger. I was amazed, I've worked with computers since 1988 when I was a mere sprat of a lad, no problems ever. Then it just comes on...
