I'm quite well known for my ridiculous road trips but have never written about them on here before, i have a history on other forums of massive breakdowns, vehicle fires, taking the mickey out of the AA and generaly beating the odds to make it home, most folks idea of hell is my usual holiday I just did an overland trip to pick up a camper for friends from Casablanca, i wrote it up on another forum i use but thought you lot might like a link to see how disastrous things can go ;D its just aswell I'm quite a positive person!! This is an "anything goes" forum so language etc might not be to everyones taste, you have been warned Heres the link... www.orrp.com/smf/index.php?topic=44142.0

haha brilliant read, having driven an old ldv minibus to morocco and back i can relate to your trip. Some of the highlights of our trip were: The power steering belt and the clutch cable both snapped on the same day, driving a 3.5t van with no power steering and no clutch was difficult. We found a belt and bodged the cable with rope.
In morocco be got pulled by the rozzers several times, speeding, overtaking and no numberplate. once we bribed them, once we made them forget the offence by talkin about english football teams and the other time they believed us when we said we had no money to bribe them with.
We went over to windsurf in a little village, lived on the beach there for 4 weeks. There was a small police station for the village on the beach, we may have been smoking substances in full view of them, noone ever batted an eyelid. The only time the police disturbed us was when they kept us up by doing something to a man who really wasn't enjoying it. On the way into ceuta on the way back to spain the sniffer dogs went mental over the back of the van, we sh*t it, we had cleaned the van out but who knows. Luckily for us the dogs didn't pinpoint anything so we were eventually let go, scary stuff.
The best bit was british customs: "how long have you been away lads?" "8 weeks" "the three of you have lived in there all that time?" peering into the back "yep" "i'm not goin in there! go through lads!"
we were lucky, never got robbed, except for some cakes by the kids in the village. some of our friends got broken into while they were asleep in their van in italy, they took everything, even toothbrushes!
the trip was awesome and really wanna do it all again in the transit

The journey of 1000 miles starts with a single coffee.

AAhh....the delights of Morocco, we went there last year and about 500 yards out of Tangiers port we got hit from behind by a nutter in a van. Bribery.....wouldn't want it any other way....so how many euros to allow me to break this seemingly unwritten rule, no problem officer! ;D
Great story, far more fun than an easy journey!

Sadly they clear that forum quite regularly and my old landrover ones are gone for ever but at one point old "Leaky" as he was known was world famous for misadventures. The only one i could still find on there was when i decided to go "potholing" not that i had ever done it before but i figured it couldnt be that hard.... ;D
It is in the section called "stuff we decided to keep"
Glad some others here have done Morroco, it seems unbelievable when you talk about it so its nice that other folk have played the system there ;D

Do it....naked on a pushbike with no valuables ;D Honestly though do it, i did that on the spur of the moment and we went in to it blind. But don't let it put you off If i ever go back it'll be a very different story... an armoured car and a gun come to mind

Just seen the pothole topic.
Looks fun. although I am claustrophobic.
You seem to live quite local to me then it seems?
Only interesting thing I've been in is the fort that is on the hill overlooking the seacat side of the port.

The key is to distribute your cash amongst your person, trousers with zips on the pockets are very handy aswell. We got in for the princely sum of 2 Euros, another friend who had to his wallet out got stiffed for 40 Euros. You just have to be a little wary about things, a general rule of thumb when crossing any African border we found was the blokes in uniform are powerless but the man stood next to him in designer gear is the powerful one so be nice to him! I hanker that one day I will do the London -Cape Town overland run, but in a 2WD vehicle, just for kicks. Find a nice diesel estate and off I'll go.
