I've just been offered one of the above at a price well within my budget. It's tested until August and taxed until the end of this month. There are some shonky bits about it, but overall, not too bad. Nice set of alloys and leather trim. What's worrying me though is the engine has a tapping noise, which can be heard at low engine speed and start up. At higher revs apparently the noise can't be heard. The owner reckons it had the noise when he got the car in September and hasn't got any worse. It does not affect the running of the car at all. It's a Merc 300 SE, F reg, with the straight six 3.0 litre engine. What do you think?

Do these have hydraulic tappets? If you're lucky it may be a case of replacing them and giving it a flush plus oil change but if you're unsre or smell a rat then walk away. These do come up at very good prices quite often and due to fuel costs people are scared of them.

A mate of mine has had a few and reckons these big mercs can wear cams, I don't know if this could cause the tapping.

Yep, cams aren't great on 'em. And tappets have a tendency to wear.
In terms of resale, the 280/300-engined models are very very undesirable...as are the SEs.
Big V8 SELs are the way forward - tons more spec/power for not much more cash.

Are these single or twin cam? This one's pretty well specced up. 16 inch aftermarket deep dish alloys and electric everything.

on some of the 300s (m103) engine, apparently sometimes the little 10mm bolts holding the oil feed pipe feeding the cam used to work themselves loose, at worst fall out, obviously causing rapid wear/noises from cams.pop the rocker cover off before handing any cash....single cam engine by the way!!.. imho the 3 litre 6 is an awesome lump, and in my own experience ive only ever heard problems with cams on the v8s....best of luck

Does the head have to come off to replace the cam or tappets? I believe so - if they're anything like the V8's then some of the bolts holding the camshaft bearing shells go right through and hold the head down. Don't hold me to that though, I'm just going off what I've learnt from other Merc lumps. To be honest, if the camshaft / tappets are knackered then it would have to be really cheap, in my opinion anyway. Camshaft isn't cheap unless you can find a good 'un at a breakers, plus possible HG replacement, plus hydraulic lifters... PS : Bigperms right, the oilways feeding the camshaft are a weak point and either break up, block up or come off leading to b*ggered cam lobes.

The M103 engine doesn't need the head removing to replace the tappets, I did it on my 190e 2.6 and it was a nice easy job. Cam out, tappets out, tappets in, cam back in, job done!

Oh, and the tappets are about a fiver a piece from Eurocarparts (plus vat) - or they were a couple of years ago when I did mine!

Ooops. Sorry for giving you wrong info Every day's a school day. If you need a camshaft, you might be better asking at somewhere like Mercman in Southampton or Boss Parts in Leeds (both do mail order). They ain't as cheap as regular breakers but they have most stuff on the shelf.
