Can I get one thing straight...It is not FREE ROAD TAX it is TAX EXEMPTION. I.E. EXEMPT from Taxation.
I was questioned the other day...'Why does your Triumph have free road tax?' And I replied, 'Because I rarely drive it, only at weekends. Your modern eurobox needs road tax because you drive it every day.'
He says that every car owner should have to pay Road Tax, regardless. Any other views on this subject?

You get a tax disc, and its free of charge. Hence it is free road tax surely?

I hope you cuffed him upside the head.
To an extent I agree that all cars should pay tax, regardless. But that tax should be levied on a "pay as you drive" basis. This would be viable without "eye in the sky" Orwellian measures if fuel tax wasn't already so obscene.

you don't pay tax because you only use it at weekends? what?
your car was made before 1973, that's why you don't pay tax
if you're saying why doesn't the government charge tax then maybe it's because it is rarely used

The way I see it is cars of a certain age are classed as "historic" so the government give you a free tax disc every year so you can spend the money keeping it on the road, like a mobile museum exhibit.

Yes okay it is free, but we don't use the cars as much surely? Why should we have to pay the same prices? Yeah, I reckon Pog has it right. What I was getting at is that I don't use my car everyday (as my mate does) and I believe that I shouldn't have to pay 110 pound a year, for a vehicle I use only at weekends.

Sorry but to me, it's free tax and NOT tax exemption. If you were exempt, surely you wouldn't need a disc? As you get one for £0, it's free tax.
I don't actually agree with it - especially as it's caused such a pain with people changing IDs just to save themselves a few quid. I think older cars should pay less tax, as the majority aren't used as much.
Pogweasel's desire for road pricing (without the scary IT project that will end up costing us sixty twelve bazillion pounds) is fair. You drive more, you pay more. You drive a fuel guzzler, you pay more.

If a car has been on the road since 1973 then it's paid it's dues to the government in my eyes. That's how ever many cars, up till 1998 paying their way. Let em have it free, after all, how many of them are in daily use.
The whole thing winds me up. My Capri is a 1976 car and that has paid it's dues too, but i still have to cough up £99 for six months tax. Grrrr.

Surely free tax is a contradiction in terms (or oxymoron if your intelligent)? Tax is defined as "A tax is a financial charge or other levy imposed on an individual or a legal entity by a state or a functional equivalent of a state " If you don't hand over any dosh, its not a tax.

The UK has a large motoring heritage and a classic car industry that is renowned the world over and employs thousands - the free road tax encourages that industry. It also shows the government to be handing a concession to the motorist even if it is only for a very small minority.

I would say its exempt from Road Fund Licence, I can remember when my MG qualified the last year of the rolling 25 years. I was always worried there was going to be a sting in the tail with my exempt vehicle, but it still hasn't happened.
I thought the old justification of having to display a RFL disc to prove MOT and Insurance was valid to an extent but the cost was excessive, but now it all computerised and plod can see who has the relavent documentation why does it still carry on.
Its a licence not a tax.

I'm with popuptoaster . i go for cars that get given the tax disc freeee , its a great feeling being given a bit of paper that many have to pay through the nose for we would be doing those poor souls an injustice not to utilise the gift to its fullest ;D lets face it this country is far from big , to get anywhere is only a few hours one day I'm going to diesel one of my tax free old fords and use old veg oil to make the running costs the bare minimum within a few years the initial cost of the car would get outweighed by the free tax and little tax on the fuel so id be able to take evening trips to wherever i liked and the only cost being time

I'd say its free because you still have to display the disc and the cost is stated as NIL. Exempt would mean that you do not have to display a disc surely. Must be a great feeling walking out of the Post Office with a years tax and not having paid anything.

I had this argument with someone at work, and then I threw the spanner in the works by saying I ride a (push) bike too.
"On the road?"
"Yes."
"Well your bike should be taxed too"
"My modern is taxed, and I can't drive/ride all three at once".
