any of you guys know if you can bung classic legs onto a 105e to disc brake the front end? can you use the classic track control arms? I only ask as I seem to have just bought a 1600 pinto'd 105e for a very small amount of cash (like scrap money!), and I will soon have a 'surplus' set of struts out of my 100e (as it's going onto escort struts) even if the scrap priced 105e turns out to be poop, another anglebox has turned up in the village a few miles away too.... ;D
not looking for a mega performance, eccentric top mounts world cup x membered monster, just a bit of a budget stripped out car if I can get away with using some of this cr*p lying around here
also, can you get a x flow onto the stock gearbox, or will that go horribly wrong??
cheers! - kev

X-flow should fit your box nicely but isnt it a 3 speed? I seem to remember reading about modifying Anglias in a magazine. I am sure fitting arms and stuff from the MK1 cortina was the prefered way to go. I am sure there will be Ford experts clambering towards you to confirm/deny this as I type!

Kev,
Long time since I've done this but yes you can use the Classic struts on the 105E. You will need the TCAs from the Classic but you will need to drill the engine x-member about an inch inboard on either side otherwise you will get very silly camber on the front which will wear your tyres out in about 5000 miles, or less (ask me how I know! ;D).
All the X-flow and Pre-X-flow lumps will fit to the original gearbox as they all have the same bolt pattern. You will need to check the pilot bearing in the flywheel is the right size and also you will need a sump from a Mk2 Cortina 1300 or 1600 as these are front sumped like the 105E while Escort / Capri X-flows were rear sumped.
Hope this helps, Rich

Also forgot to say that you can use the matching x-flow gearbox (if it's a hydraulic clutch) but you'll probably need to cut a new hole in the prop tunnel for the gear shifter and you'll also need the prop from a 123E 1200 Anglia ideally. Have a look on www.105speed.com/Rich

Yep the struts go right on, I seem to remember the X member is drilled 5/8"ths inboard, BUT, TCAs for classic struts are impossible to find a sensible price, so if your TCAs are shagged, look at fitting Mk2 cortina bits, slight mods to the top mounts but I think they bolt up like the classics Crossflow will fit onto the gearbox, you will need to fit the sump and front cover and dipstick off a anglia or Mk1 or 2 cortina, If you are going for a 1600, you will need to use a 1600 front bowl sump as the crank or rods foul the sump if its a small one, also if the block was originally a rear bowl sump, you will need to plug the dipstick hole in the RH rear of the block. If the block is a 711, you will need to fit the correct escort engine mounts as the block is wider than the 681/691 blocks which use anglia/Cortina mounts Stay away from the old 1500 four bolt cranks, they have rope rear main seals and are prone to leaking

Wise words from Ian! If you can find a copy - Tuning Four Cylinder Fords by Paul Davies published by Speedsport has lots of very useful info. It's pretty old though (I have a copy of the 2nd edition dated 1974 - ISBN 0-85113-076-3) but you might find a copy via eBay.

Redrilling the cross-member does give you a bit of bumpsteer though as it changes the relationship with the steering arms, it's better to get adjustable/modified TCAs but they are more money so maybe you can live with it.
I think the anglia 1200 super box is different to the 997 one (stronger and synchro on first IIRC) they do recommend going for that one - it's the same as the Mk1 Tina. Do you know which yours is?
I've got a 1500 tina box you can have for nowt if it'll help, it's in South London.

The bearing in the back of the crank is a different diameter in the 997 engine, it's bigger so you'll probably find the 997 box won't go on a 1600 engine because of this, you'll either need to get it re-drilled or use a 1200 box.
Classic struts are an 'alright' fit but the camber is wrong and redrilling the crossmember is a bit of a bodge because of the bump steer. The steering arms are also the wrong length and in the wrong place so you'll get slow steering and not as much lock. To be honest if it's just a straight 1600 going in there I'd stick with the standard brakes, they will be fine if in good condition and nipped up properly.

You can also get a kit of parts to convert the standard anglia stuts to fiesta disk brakes. Have a look on 105speed for the 'Wlico' kit or for the Milton race prep kit. They may only be Fiesta brakes but they are very effective.

To fit either Classic or Mk2 Cortina struts they benefit from eccentric top mounts and lengthened TCA's to get the geometry correct, normally achieved by buying adjustable ones off Milton.
The size of springs can limit the size of wheels you can fit so most people opt for 21/4" coilovers on shortened strut bodies with adjustable inserts, again from Miltons.
Decent steering lock and ratio can be achieved by fitting shorter steering arms, guess where you can get them from?
With either strut you also benefit from disc brakes but only the Mk2 Cortina struts will accept vented ones.
If you go with the Cortina struts make sure you get the steering arms to match at the same time as there are different ones. Also some Cortina struts,1600E I think, have the caliper on the leading edge whereas others have it on the trailing edge.
