Dudes!
I have owned 3 Trabs!!
Fantastic in every sense of the word.
The 600cc 2 stroke is indestructable!
Me & my Trab no 2 were used on the Adrian Flux TV commercials on Men & Motors in 2005.
Many people have a fancy for one but few ever get one.
Built in Zwikau East Germany between 1962 & 1992 by Sachsenring Motors.
Distributed by IFA Wartburg in Eisenach East Germany.
Trabant means Satelite.
The bonnet badge is an S in a circle.
These were my Trabants.
Trabant No1. 1988 601S Bought off a guy in Derbyshire who had 49 of them !
Trabant No2. 1976 601S Bought locally for £160 !
This was my last Trab. A 1988 Deluxe (without seperate coloured roof)
Over 6 million made !
The design remained relatively unchanged with only mechanical mods over the years.
Saloon (limousine), Estate (Kombi) & Jeep (Tramp) body styles available.
6v gave way to 12v in 1975 and the last Trabs were given an option of a 1.1 VW Polo engine.
Almost all sold wre 2 cyl 600cc 2 stroke engined and manual gearbox.
A steel space frame with screwed on Duraplast body panels and a flat steel floor.
Transverse cart spring suspension with 4 telescopic shock absorbers.
No frills.
4 seats, 2 doors and a steering wheel.
4 speed all synchro column change.
Drum brakes (non servo) all round.
These can be a git to change shoes,
but any Trab should always have it's brakes checked out.
Deluxe Trabs had coloured roof & chrome bumpers.
Later options were fuel guage (the norm was a plastic dip stick) & heated rear screen.
50:1 Unleaded and 2 stroke oil mix.
50+ MPG & Cheap insurance.
All parts available in the UK cheaply.
These are still huge in Germany.
Expect to pay up to £800 for a minter.
Best buy are non UK registered cars.
People are scared of these as they require an MOT.
Expect to pay up to £300 for a non UK reg car.
Due to the smoke from the 2 stroke people assume they will fail the emmissions !
Ha! 2 strokes are exempt from emmisions testing! ;D
Mod the body & the paint, but leave the running gear alone.
They are bloody quick in standard 600cc form & the sound & smell is what Trabant are all about !
