back in the day I used to use a company called Tennants for my number plates. They moved unit and I stopped using them. Being as I have to change mine now I thought I'd track them down as they used to do pressed ali reflectives for £9 a pair.
Tennants were a real oldscool plate company lie Hills or whoever and back in the day their plates used to have a little silver coiloured plaque on them which said "Tennants Ltd" in kinda stylised font. You still see them on unrestored 40s 50s type cars where people haven't gone mad and put pressed new ali black plates on when they over-restored it.
Anyway they used to be in a nice old Victorian factory with a traditional trade counter shop front which you went in and it smelt of tobacco smoke, there was a coffee machine and a big rack with all the different sizes and styles of number plates on.
A cheery chap with grey hair and one of those brown cotton overcoats storemen used to wear would take your order, and disappear out back to press, rivet or whatever. If you wanted white or silver digits rather than plain grey on the rivetted style plates he'd paint them so you'd have to come back the next day for them.
They charged £1 per set extra to hand paint them for you.
Anyway I found their new premices. Its a nasty modern 1990s or so building unit and theres no welcoming old geezer behind a trade ocunter, theres and "office reception" behind a big sign that says "DVLA Approved and Registered Trade Customers ONLY - We DO NOT Sell To The Public"
Nads.
I know a place in Lincoln still does the plates I want at a sensible price but its getting over there.
Internet geezers all seem to want top dollar for plates and no idea of turnaround time.
Meh.

There's often a mobile plate maker at autojumbles and car shows (there was one at the Ally Pally yesterday), maybe there's a show/jumble near you soon?

Shame to hear of more smaller friendly firms going over to the dark 'corporate side' but it just makes finding someone who does 'for cash' all the more rewarding, and forums like this where that is regarded highly and details passed on all the more helpful.
As it happens I'm kinda doing a Lincoln/Nottingham run this saturday if you wanted to order the plates and could wait until saturday for me to pick them up...be about 2 o'clock in Lincoln...and then pootle over to Nottingham to hand em over?

Bazateer - Aye, they know what to charge too. One of them was like £40 a pair. One of the online places is more than that was well plus P&P...
And when I nipped out at lunch I ran across a Police mobile ANPR car! Need plates soon.
Charlatan - I think you need the V5 and stuff to get a plate made up these days. Tennants were't a small company. They were and still are huge maker of (legal) plates, reflective tape, reflective coatings, plastic sheeting, plastic extrusions and all manner of rubber and latex sheet stock.

AK, Here's a thought. Buy some new spangly modern plates, leave them in their wrapper and place in the boot (somewhere they won't get knocked about and damaged/worn) but lose the receipt (no date to incriminate you). Then when/if you get stopped for wrong plates, "Yes officer, I've just bought some proper plates and I'm off home to fit them now. They're in the boot, wanna see?" Just a thought, and will only work once with each officer!

oops ... in my head that definitely came out as more like firms with a better tolerance to the enthusiastic individual as often more likely to be experienced when dealing with smaller more friendly firms... I've got the dunces cap now and if you need me I'll be in the corner Although if it makes any difference to you I'm making the Nottingham/lincoln stage of the journey on Saturday morning so an amended offer still stands

cheers for the offer. If I get stuck otherwise I might take you up on that if they'll do it without the V5.
I suspect Tennants took a decission that it wasn't worth the hassle dealing with the genpop when they moved to their new place. There used to be a lovely old fastener company I used to use for odd bits and bobs, nts and bolts and all that made right there on the premices. If you ever wanted anything to fit this or that then you cold take up your broken stuff and they'd match it for you and you'd get a handful for a quid or whatever. Now closed down by the looks of it when I passed last.
Also also the place which did all the machine work on my Buick engine, they seem to have closed down and gone too. That was a big old workshop full of lathes and mills and whatever which had been there since the 1930s or longer by the looks of them. And old guys with grey moustaches who called you sir and had manuals for everything from Austin 7 to a Ford Zodiac lined up inthe "manuals room".

Shockingly, Halfords will do them for £12.99 each I think. But they will demand to see your V5 and your photo driving licence. And your address had better match! In the end I found that I'd lost my driving licence so I went to a local motorfactors who were a bit more lenient about proving my ID Graham

Was that Tennants place in Sneinton, off Carlton Road?
Oddly enough, I got my plate from a little place in Lincoln - can't recall the name of the place but they're dead friendly and have an old-skool over-the-counter service... might be the same place?

Tennants used to be there but they moved up to Basford some years ago. Thats when they went all "DVLA only" I think. The place in Lincoln was told to me by Street so I bet its the same place I can order online for £25 a pair so I might just do that. I'll pop over to that place in Lincoln next time I'm passing for my other plate requirement.

I wanted a pre-2001 style one for the front of the Mazda. I put a "New Charles Wright" one on it when the old one got bust and it looks wrong. Letters are too narrow. Might go up and see if I can get some proper ones for it some time.

Arnold Garage next to the old Esso (demolished) on Copice road mate (kind of across from the Maid pub), he will do anything you like. I just rang him and its a about 10quid each.
He did my pressed Black and silver ally one, he also did my Coupe ones when I did not have the logbook back from the dealer.

Just to let you all know, the legal stuff you need for numberplates is as follows:
Proof of the vehicle: V5, V5C, V948, V778 or other V- document that proves number transfer, or police warrant
Proof of yourself: Driver's licence, passport, armed forces or police card
And one of the two forms of ID must have your permanent address on (and both forms must have the same name!)
We get people come into Halfords all the time asking for plates with only an MOT slip... not much we can do I'm afraid...
