How successful is it? I have a NOS wing which has some rather nice surface "patina" (it's a bit rusty ;D) and it crossed my mind to just key it up an lay some clear lacquer over it. But, obviously I don't want to send an expensive panel to an early grave and have to replace / treat it if the rust bubbles through. So... will it? Or does the lacquer seal the rust in completely and stop the oxidation process? I'm just toying with the idea, so it's no great loss if I end up just satin blacking the thing.

The rust will eventually break through, just like it would through any coloured paint you put over it. Bear in mind that if you key it with anything courser than 1200 w+d or a grey scoth pad, you will see the rubbing down marks through the laquer.

If you want to keep it "patina-ed", why not keep it sprayed with duck oil/WD40/ 3-in-one or something like that. The oil will keep the water out and it'll still have the rust. It'll look sort of oil coated but it'll add to the general ratty-ness.

Hmm, I might be making a rod for my own back then. Keeping rust to a manageable level is a right PITA, and something that will inevitably end in more bloody welding. Perhaps it would be easier / less hassle to just paint the fuggin thing instead of being a smartarse... Thanks for the replies

Clean it de rust it prime it and paint it, anything else is just plain daft, as it will keep rusting and become unusable in a very short space of time..

i do like a bit of patina but nice straight, painted panels always look better and like u say itl save work in the long run

Do the look you are after for this year, lacquer it with no prep. as you have said it has rust the damage is already done so don't worry about it then take the wing off have it lightly blasted then to the paint shop over the winter and have the car treated to a respray of its life as you have had time to save a bit more........

take it you are after the rat look! but i think after the extent you have gone to getting rid of the rest of the rust seems like a bit of a waste of time give it a nice coat of scwartz

Perhaps it might be an idea to paint it, but just use whatever you have lying around. Black paint isn't just black paint. A car that uses lots of different textures and finishes of black paint ends up looking really ratty and interesting. (more so than one painted in one type of matt black)
It is cheap, and it avoids actually neglecting your car for the sake of its look.

I think it's going to be painted black. As I said, keeping the balance between rust that looks cool and rust that utterly rapes your bodywork is really difficult, and I'd much rather do other things than chase rust. I hate bodywork! ;D I also think I may fall foul of it looking a bit faked... even though it isn't. The rest of the car is satin black so having a rusty wing and it stopping at the A-pillar could look odd. Thanks for the advice though guys!
