Can anyone recommend a good stone guard paint? I've just been using this... ...and can honestly say it's sh*t. Should be called "Hammerite Paint But A Tiny Bit Thicker". Utter toss. I've just used a whole can on my inner wing / bulkhead but I really don't want to put the wing back on with only that curse word on as protection. So, what do you guys use? Bear in mind I don't have a compressor, so aerosols / brush-on stuff only.

Thats all stone chip is tho isnt it? thick paint! I favor the hammerite stuff personaly, best ive used.
Ive used other stuff before but its all pretty much the same, I just favor hammerite cous it drys with a nice hard glossy finish and makes a nice ripply texture where as the other stuff ive used is a but more ugly and soft.
Is there anything better out there?
If your after underbody protection you should be looking at underseals and waxyol stuff I would have thought

I was expecting it to have more texture to be honest. The original stuff was like thick foamy / rubbery stuff. I don't expect to find that anywhere, but I was sort of hoping for a gnarlier finish. Both to hide the weld and seam sealer lines and to protect the chassis. I'm going to WaxOyl afterwards, but was after something a bit tougher as a barrier agains stones. I can't see that Hammerite stuff holding up for long.

what about buying a tin of thick-a$$ roofing bitumen stuff from B+Q. a couple of coats of decent primer and a couple more of that stuff and you should be good for 20 years, I reckon I'm gonna try it.

LOL @ xbollox, it might! ;D
Basically I need a rubberised, high-build stoneguard. That Hammerite stuff is alright if you want to put some on your front valance or summat, but I think basically I'm using the wrong product (even though the brurb on the can said it's good for chassis and stuff... it ain't.)

hi benzboy if you have removed any loose under seal and have exposed bare metal then it needs to be treated with an etch primer or a red oxide primer first if you put stone chip straight over bare metal it traps any damp or grease in the metal and will start to rust from the inside.its all down to how you apply the stone chip are you using a schutz gun this will give you the texture you are looking for.

It's new metal, so I've given it a couple of coats of red lead and seam sealed it. I just expected it to be a different product really! But I think I'm going to be stuck without a Shutz gun (I don't have a compressor)

yep compressors well needed with one of them guess you will have to just keep loading up the coats then maybe some black waxoyl this will give a good protection and it dries a satin colour i did this on a few yanks ive built

I am just stripping what Mr B said off the Midget, and its excellent, the water has not got anywhere near the vital places it usually does. I watered it down with thinners and sprayed it on, only issue is notwstripping back its a total pain in the .

benzboy! i'm using HYCOTE stone guard & its really good but stinks! proper toxic smells i don't care about that stuff though, this stuff leaves a rippled finish but you need 3 coats, the rubberised stuff is underseal, underseal is curse word when you need to repair your car in future cause its a wanka to remove, stick with thestonechip & top-up as needed! & emty a few gallons of waxoyl in your box sections
