I've dug out an old K&N filter that needs a clean and re-oil. I got two questions: 1) Can I clean it in hot soapy water or does it need something special? 2) The oil. Is it really special stuff, or can I use something like 3in1 / 20W50 / Utterly Butterly? Thanks!

don't soak it in thinners overnight, it won't be there in the morning. as i found out doh !

Nope hot water and detergent fine 2) The oil. Is it really special stuff, or can I use something like 3in1 / 20W50 / Utterly Butterly? Thanks! use the proper oil

If you cant get K&N filter oil then any one that deals with MX bikes will have filter oil, its properly sticky stuff as well

Brilliant, thanks! I'll look into finding an MX dealer. I feel a bit of a cheapskate as K&N oil isn't that expensive really... ;D

Do yourself a favour and buy a K&N Cleaning Kit, we sell a ton of K&N filters for motorcyles (I even have one in the Shop Hack Skoda) and since K&N is almost the only cellulose based filter it's verry important to NOT use regular MX cleaner & oils for foam type filters, if you use that stuff you will in the worst case melt the cellulose fibre down to a pulp or make it colapse enough to create a "breahing through a straw" effect and that's not why you got an expensive free flowing K&N filter. The K&N Filter Cleaner Kit is not that expensive and used right it will last almost forever (just like a well cared for K&N Filter), I usually dunk the filter in a Tupperware with cleaning fluid over night (the cleaning fluid can be reused over and over, I run it through a coffe filter back in the bottle), after the filter is dryed out put it on a piece of newspaper and put a drop of Filter Oil on each ridge of the filter and let it sit overnight, you can now see how the oil has covered the whole filter, if not give it a small drop where it stopped on it's way down through the filter, done like this the Filter Oil will last a long time....
DP says: We use K&N filter on almost everything around here.....

The K&N Filter Cleaner Kit is not that expensive and used right it will last almost forever (just like a well cared for K&N Filter), < snip> done like this the Filter Oil will last a long time.... They can last a heck of a long time I bought a panel filter K&N for for a 1986 Carlton 1.8Li, used if for 80K miles fitted it in a Senator 2.5 and did another 80K then fitted it to another Senator (and probably another one or two over the years) and did at least 100K in all of them and it now fitted to the daily driver BMW 740 - I was amazed that it fitted them all but I guess it's a common size any I've only cleaned it once!!!
