With some of the emphasis on the "CON"course part of the word. Seen this beetle a few times in the Sainsburys and B&Q carpark. Spoke to the owner before as well, and always told me what a great job had been done fixing the rust etc. Saw it today with a scar or two. Note the depth of the filler.

Looks like it is bubbling up around the headlight too, and the door hinges.
This is why reputable places take lots of "in progress" photos for you, or welcome you to pop round and see how it is going.

Yep, bubbling in quite a few places.
A year or two ago she was real meticulous about the car, seems unwashed now too.
Altogether lost is for me, but the filler depth is a pretty nasty surprise if you do not expect it there.

If the restorer fills accessible, relatively flat panels like that just imagine the horrors under the rest of it. Look at the rust under the filler! Even Rat look folks fix that sort of thing! Ha ha!

I can't imagine what the rest of it's like.....if I'd paid money to have a so-called 'professional' job done and saw that, I think I'd fear for my own safety if they'd been let loose underneath it as well. I feel sorry for your friend Grizz, she must feel as if she's been done up like a kipper.
Plus it must drive like a skip....a stock Bug has trouble getting out of it's own way, imagine lugging 100kg of Bondo round as well!!

True that, if I'd paid someone to fix a motor for me and it came back as badly done as that I'd be obliged to park the car on his face before politely asking for my money back. So what's the legal situation on getting back at conmen like that, I take it she was specifically promised and paid for the fact that the repairs had been done correctly with new metal etc? In that case, maybe she could seek damages from the garage that done it to get her car repaired properly, seeing as it might well now be not road legal or structurall sound, and it's their fault for doing such a bad job without the owner's consent and knowledge, and further to that, if she was told the repairs had been done the correct way, surely that constitutes among other things false advertising and a form of fraud and deception? Or am I talking mince as usual? Anyone who has a clue about anything at all able to enlighten us? ;D Either way it's f*cking outrageous.

Moral of the story is to check on the work whilst it is being done! When I was having the duff rear arches sorted on the Charmant, I decided to drop in unannounced to see how they were getting on with it. The chap doing it was happy to show me what had been done so far, how he had done it and what was left to do.
Looks like in that case someone will need to strip it all down and do it again properly!

I've said it before, but surely to god it would have been easier to re-skin the door or put a new one on than to weld up a load of patches, trowel on a load of bog and sand it down until it looks right. Unbelievable!

That looks like the rear quarter panel to me. It's notoriuos for rusting out and genuine panels are few and far between so most people use pattern ones which are ALOT cheaper but don't fit well at all.
If you look at most "restored" bugs they will all be heavily filled in this area to be honest, it's kinda the done thing as it costs too much to hand make a panel that fits right. A car that has gone here will more then likely need new heater channels and floor in some cases to.
I've never known it to be a problem if the car is solid under the filler, it's not been left outside to get porous and it's been mixed right. I did my mates beetle for her 8 years ago this way and it still looks perfect now ;D

Oof, looks a bit nasty! My Bug's had a new rear quarter at some point in its life, but it was cut from a donor shell rather than a pattern panel, so it was pretty much an all-metal fix. According to the previous owner who had the work done though, it was an expensive and lengthy process even with a panel that fit right, so it's no wonder some restorers take shortcuts.

Oh right, I thought it was the front arch / door! ;D I don't know much about bugs. Even if it's kind of accepted to do that, if I was paying for a full resto I wouldn't want it done like that.

rare colour too.
Shame it's been plodded up like that. Sorry but that's a bit TOO excessive for my liking, even given the poor fit of pattern parts

thats about 'normal' within the vw scene.
anyone else would find it unacceptable, but it seems VW 'scene' people would rather have work done by people with the right name/image than the right skills..........

As dez says, its about normal. Allmost all of the bugs ive had in have had quarters like that. I don't know why though, even a pattern one can be made to fit right with a bit of work, needing only a small skim once its done.

A genuine VW entire rear quarter is only £170 From these people : Status VW Makes you wonder why you would spend so much time and effort bodging it ?

I don't care whether it is commonly done, or whether it is considered acceptable in the VW scene.. it's still wrong!
And I thought mini owners were bad for putting up with complete bodge jobs.. I think this has killed any desire I had to get a bug now. If the campers are all this bad, I will be very very sad.
