I want to fit an electric fan to my Mk2 Escort, but the kits are so expensive!!! I was thinking of going to the local scrappers and buying an electric fan, and getting a thermostatic switch to control it from the local motor factors.
Does anyone know of any car (that may be found in a scrapyard) that has an electric fan which sits in front of the radiator and blows and is up to 11 inches in diameter? Thanks.

The one on my Mk1 is from a Pug 405 [it's actually a twim-fan set up on those]. If the Mk2's the same, there is a small brace running from the bottom/front crossmember vertically in front of the radiator to the slam panel - cut this out ;D The fan is probably the biggest you will get in there without more cutting & has about 1/4 inch clearance top & bottom. I had to make up a bracket to hold it in place but if you are capable of the conversion then the brackets gonna be no probs. How you wire it's up to you. I put mine on a switch at the time & that's how it still works!!! ;D * Can measure the fan if you want tomorrow when it's a tad lighter

I built my electric fan set-up totally from scrap parts. I basically wanted a fan that'd shift maximum air. The best I could find was from a Mk3 Cav SRi. Not sure what diameter it is (probably more than 11"). You can of course flip the fan around so it's in front or behind the rad - all you need to do is change the polarity of the wires, to change it from "pusher" to "puller". So I wouldn't be too concerned about where the fan is situated on the donor car . Metro ones are pretty small (possibly 10 or 11 inch), failing that the Pug 405 has a twin fan set-up - maybe you could pull one of those out? As for the temp switch, I used a Ford Escort OHC switch, simply because I had to make a union in the top hose anyway, so I used the thermostat/temp switch housing from one! Looks quite neat even if I do say so myself! It kicks in a bit late for my liking but it hasn't ever overheated - even in the mother of all traffic jams on the way to RTTS last year!

I've got a Kenlowe ajustable switch on the Sceptre.... don't know if you can still buy them, I already had mine. They have a capilary tube that fits in the top of the rad via the top hose...... I found I had to use some gasket cement to stop it leaking. The idea is to set it to come on when the temp gauge is on about three quarters, not when it's at normal, otherwise it will be running too long. I find mine comes on when I switch off after a run, due to the heat soak when the water stops circulating.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I'd really like an adjustable fan switch but I think you can only get them with the Kenlowe kits AFAIK. If they are available separately they'll probably be expensive - the Escort one only cost me a couple of quid! I'll have to ask Ford if they can get ones that kick in at lower temperatures (maybe for foreign markets).

Adjustable Thermostats can be got second hand on Ebay, but they are normally fairly expensive. You can get them seperately brand new. I have yet to shop around to find the cheapest one, but Car Builder Solutions ( www.nfauto.co.uk) do one for £24.50. I'll let you know if I find a cheaper one.

Had a rough measure looking through the grill & the 405 fan seems to be around 12.5 inchs diameter & like I said that is a tight fit!!! There are other switches that fit ''inline'' in the top hose. I have no picture but think you'll find the likes of Demon Tweeks & Burtons sell them. You have to cut a section out of the hose for this to fit in so you will need the top hose to be straight for a good 6 inches at a guess. If you are running a crossflow then it will not fit unless you rearrange/ reroute the hose. ;D Pricey aswell, think you're looking around the £40 mark!!!!

A neat way I've seen done is to find a piece of rubber hose with a junction in it (I think some Metros had such pipes along with quite a few others...). Cut the smaller pipe off leaving about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, find a suitable fan switch that'll go in the hole nice and tight, then jube clip it in place. Fit the pipe instead of your stock top hose and wire it up! It has to be the correct diameter and shape, obviously!
